Do the compasses actually work?

I compared them to my Garmin watch and phone app and they seem to be somewhat accurate. I think they will get you in the general direction you will need to go. That being said, I bought them for the starter, which works great, not for the compass.

Is the compass accurate?

Pretty accurate. You know, as accurate as a tiny compass can be. Compass and fire starter work as advertised. The flint and steel put off a real nice spark. I recommend this product.

Is it small enough to fit in a altoids can?

No. It’s to large to fit in an Altoona can. Good question thou.
