William Coldstream: Catalogue Raisonne

At long last
Well done to Peter Rumley for producing the catalogue; Coldstream's portraits of now obscure upper echelon figures hang far from the public gaze, so it is good to have them in reproduction. A number of his paintings can be found in Pallant House, Chichester, the bequest of Prof. C St John Wilson, also the subject of Coldstream's best portrait. Coldsream's career as a painter was diverted as he took on the professorship at the Slade, and he also accepted commissions, so it is a matter of speculation just what he might have done if he'd had the life of his colleague Patrick George, or student, latterly friend of sorts, Euan Uglow, who refused commissions, and just had one day a week tutoring. An excellent catalogue then, to join the existing Bruce Laughton work on Euston Road, and Catherine Lampert's work on Euan Uglow. You can also see the rigours of the measuring technique in a 1970's television programme called 'Aquarius' as Uglow works on 'Root Five Nude' one of his best.
