How do you open the lid?

Trust me I had the same problem! Then I saw the provided by Amazon pictures of the lid and it's salt/pepper storage area sitting side by side is when I found that while holding onto the bottom part (the half with the black plastic cross bar is the bottom half) then prying upward on the top half it simply 'pops off,' then I filled the storage cavity with pepper corns and rock salt in the other, then just snap the top half back onto the bottom half. The top part does not screw on and off. Best of luck to you :)

Yes, they are the same. But they are extremely small. I keep one in my purse for dining out. I like my ground pepper!
