Very useful for quick lookups for Chinese language learners who forgot Chinese grammar, but do know English well.
Only book of it's kind out there for the language. Immediate must-buy.Let's you look up something like 'Demonstrative Adjective' - you know how it works in English on the left page, and it tells you how it works in Chinese on the right page. Super easy to figure out what you're doing wrong when you know how it's said in English, but can't remember exactly how to do the same in Chinese.(That said, if you don't even know 'future perfect tense', 'demonstrative adjective', etc., this book isn't going to help you as much at all because you don't even know where to start from in English.)Only Simplified Chinese, so one star gone. Far too easy in modern computer word processing to make this a 'definitive' reference by including the Traditional Chinese text, so why they didn't is beyond me.Not 100% useful as a standalone text for picking up appropriate use of Chinese however. eg. You'll learn the pronouns for I, he, she, they, but you won't be told that when addressing others, it's not always 'he', but often, 'title + last name' when talking about others, esp. those higher up or in an important position. So you can get into trouble without other reference books on Chinese.

This does a great job of explaining the grammar of Chinese
This does a great job of explaining the grammar of Chinese. One page is about the grammar concepts in Chinese and on the facing page is the same thing shown how it is done in English. It doesn't waste a lot of time and gets right to the point, so I find this really useful. This is not the first time that I have studied a language, so this succinct guide is very useful.

Beautiful pedagogy!
All learners of Chinese should own this title. Many of my grammatical questions were answered in a very simple way. No need to purchase detailed grammars (although I own many). With this book, you will understand in simple terms all rules in summary of what your detailed, overwhelming textbooks teach. Well, it does has some shortcomings, like no index, but in conjunction with your texts, this makes a nice resource for succinct explanations of grammatical matters.

Lovely book but unreadablke in Kindle form.
Look, this looks like a great book. I just ordered it as a physical book, even though I usually don't like buying physical books (a look around my house would explain why.) But this is one of those books where they basically made images of the pages. It's unreadable, illegible on a Kindle Fire HD, barely better on an iPad.

This book is helpful, but not great
This book takes an unusual approach to learning Chinese, by comparing its grammar with English in an equivalent way. But I think that the grammars of the two languages are very different, so it's hard to make a step-by-step comparison. In any case, this book attempts comparisons only under general topics (e.g. verb tense) and not item by item (e.g. present, past, future, etc.). So the items on the facing pages (English on left, Chinese on right) do not line up or necessarily correspond. Also, I didn't find the English grammar analyses very helpful. I know how to say things in English, and I would prefer to just learn how to say them in Chinese without analyzing the English structures too much. One thing I liked very much, though, were the examples on the Chinese side. I think they were very well chosen to express different concepts. And every example is shown in pinyin, in Chinese characters, and in English. The Chinese characters are quite clear, and not blurry, as they are in so many other books. I don't think this book is suitable for rank beginners. It's better for those who already have some knowledge.

Excellent
Love this book. Well organised with good overview of many grammar points. As English and Mandarin grammar are on opposing pages, it is easy to see the differences. Logical and helpful phrases serve as examples with bold print to highlight the point being made. Pinyin, characters and English translation support comprehension. There are some exercises with answer key at the end of the book to round it all up. Perfect to accompany any Mandarin course, and excellent help for self study, especially if grammar is not your strong point.

Not a bad book by any means
Not a bad book by any means. To see things compared to the equivalent English usage helped clarify things I thought I'd known well enough before. But really, this book is only for beginners. There is a lot covered on the website chinese grammar wiki that isn't in this book, so why pay for what you can get for free?

Great Approach to study of Grammar
This book has really helped me with the understanding of both English and Chinese grammar. It is really helpful to be able to compare the similarities and differences. Highly recommended.
