UNGER 36" Nifty Nabber Reacher, Built-in Magnet, Ergonomic Grip

Owned this grabber model for ten years of roadside litter pick-up. It's still working fine. The aluminum tongs eventually bent, hindering precise retrieval of small items like broken glass shards and bottle caps, but they were easily re-straightened to original performance specs. The rubber tips have held up well. Recently ordered another Unger for the occasional, rare volunteer wanting to join in the thrill of trash clean-up with vehicles whisking by mere feet away. For those with normal wingspan, the 36 inch version is most effective for walking pick-ups and placement into bags, although the 48 inch length can be handy for reaching out from UTVs, or snaring stuff under fences. Such trivia and ensuing deep insights into the American litterbug's questionable dietary and personal habits are made possible thanks to the North Carolina politicians who have rolled secondary roadside clean-up responsibility, which inmates used to do, onto an ever compliant and gullible private citizenry, attributable to that most abused of guises, "budgetary constraints." Because litter laws are seen as a warped challenge by many miscreants and largely unenforced by overburdened authorities, every day fulfills the promise of a generous snowfall from local slobs. In that vein, it doesn't take too long to appreciate the advantages of this particular grabber over, for instance, inferior offerings, let alone having to resort to gloved, or perhaps, bare hands. A couple of heavy, ripe Snuggie Overnight diapers and a few disgusting plastic bottles filled with once warm Copenhagen tobacco spit can convince the most skeptical . The Unger is lightweight and though it may initially appear that it might not hold up to vigorous use, that has not proven to be the case. It has effectively handled tons of trash. It is able to deftly snatch everything from tiny cigarette butts to all sizes of drink containers, beer cans and hefty glass whiskey bottles, notably all the flavored concoctions of Bootlegger Jack. Based on an unscientific survey of an estimated 7,500 samples, and for those swayed by the druthers of others, Bud Lite holds a five to one advantage over Keystone and Coors in terms of beer preference. Somewhere back at St. Louis corporate, that news of roadside market share surely must do those Dalmatians and Clydesdales proud. Meanwhile, the Unger really hits its stride in tackling the gamut of plastic shopping bags, candy wrappers, chip packaging, lids, straws and fast food garbage, deposits largely courtesy of the usual nearby suspects -- Ingles grocery, the Golden Arches, Sonic and those one-every-five-miles Dollar stores. In sum, there's very little that these businesses, which generously tout their environmental commitment, can throw at local roadsides that the Unger can't manage. While objects like tires, sofas and large appliances may be beyond Unger's design lift capacity, it works quite well for retrieving smaller items like dropped screws, nuts, bolts, etc., which invariably roll into hard to reach corners of the workshop floor. During summers, the Unger has competently removed dozens of linear feet of black snakes from around the chicken house to safer places without snafu. It probably would be great for retrieving golf balls. It should prove indispensable for the elderly or anyone where bending over constitutes impaired movement. Its utility is only limited by circumstance and imagination. When one reflects upon all their wasted, cheap product purchases over the years, Unger does not make that list -- a pleasant surprise, simply but ruggedly constructed and a decent after tax value, provided Amazon free shipping, of course. Given that the Unger is quite the bargain, don't care to know, but suspect it's made in China or possibly represent North Korean high tech, either of which might be a serious negative for some. Then again, if only the NC State Legislature could get inmates on the license plate assembly line to similarly crank out Unger-like grabbers of identical quality, many of us would feel better about use of our tax dollars. That's doubly the case when out there in wind and weather dodging traffic and knowing those who should be doing the work hang out in their climate-controlled surroundings, oblivious to proper land stewardship. Recommend this Unger product.

I don't bend over well so I have a house full of grabbers. Most of them are the sheet steel spring type with rubber suction cups and gun trigger like handles. Most of these I inherited from my late father and I've had for over 12 years. I barely use the rubber suction cup type, they drop things and won't pick up anything heavy. The one grabber I had that was no complaints was this one here. Well I partially take back that statement, there was a complaint, I only had one of them and it would be left in different parts of the house, so I frequently had to look for it. Finally, and I don't know what took me so long, I decided to check the branding and see if they still made it. I should have done this sooner, I have a cart for moving groceries that's a collapsible four wheel cart with a large heavy canvas bag that will host 60 pounds or more of groceries. Most people have those wire carts that small items fall out of and are cheaply made. This was another holdover from my dad's collection of aids, and after using it in Chicago to go to an apartment that was about a 1200 foot walk from the parking garage, I decided to get a second one. Like with these I looked up the brand and ordered it on Amazon. The three pack of these was a decent price at 51 buck that comes to 17 dollars each, and not that much more than the suction cup ones. Why I like these is they are easy to hold since you don't have to hold it like a gun, the linkage does not lose tension when it's fully extended so you can lift heavier things. The rubber tips can pick up small items easier. It has a longer reach that most of these types of things, and it's very sturdy. I often hang these on the backs of kitchen chairs or other handles to keep them handy. I've loved the one I have for 12 years now, and now I have 3 more just like it. Recommended for anyone that needs a good grabber with reach, and also it's really great if you want to grab the cereal on the top shelf. In fact, since I have somethings high in the cupboard, this will keep me from straining to get stuff. Not that I've thought of that another Idea comes to mind, I'm going to take this to the grocery store now that I have 4 of them total, and use it to grab the items that are high on the shelf, or way to far in the back. I often use the powered carts in the supermarket these days as I don't walk as well as I once could, so this should help me from having to get off the cart to get the high or low stocked items. Great!

I bought the Unger Pickup tool several years ago and found it very handy to pickup stuff that has fallen behind things or to reach for things high up on shelves that would normally require a step stool or latter. It is extremely well built compared to the cheap five dollar or less imitations that try to do the same thing. The ends are like a precision tool and can pickup almost anything. It can pull out a large Bounty Paper towel roll off a shelf up high and even a box of soap (less than 2 pounds). The end is made of precision rubber but is very sturdy. It can also easily pickup a toothpick or other small objects. My original purchase cost about $30 locally which seemed a lot at the time but it has paid for itself. The same one I purchased on Amazon cost $20 and is a real bargain. Who should buy this? It's ideal for the older folks like myself that prefer not to use a latter every time you need to reach for things. The opening is about 4 inches at maximum so it'e most effective and powerful operation is for things that are obviously less than 4 inches, the smaller the better. I would limit it's use to items less than 2 pounds although it might pickup more but it could damage the metal since it is really meant for lighter things. One question that you might have is what happens if the ends becomes bent from use or if someone steps on it by mistake which happened twice this past year. Good question....The basic mechanism is made of metal and is coated with a durable rubber coating which is ribbed on the inside portion. The fingers are flexible enough that the two ends can be bent back into perfect position. In other words, it is easily fixable. The operating controls for the fingers are internal and seem very strong. The handle is blue plastic and is easy to hold and press. The green metal shaft contains the mechanism for operating the fingers and looks like it is made of aluminum. The metal finger are some kind of metal and when the handle is pushed a gear mechanism in the head moves the fingers. The finger on one head has a small magnet on the side for picking up small metals. I would not buy this unit for that purpose as there are better alternatives. This product is so good I bought a second one on Amazon for the kitchen area. If someone in your family is having trouble picking up things or has trouble reaching for things this could be a very valuable and practical gift. I've had this Nifty Nabber for four years and it has withstood daily use for that time period, so it's very well made and durable. It came in handy so many times when I was pregnant, especially at the end when it was really hard to bend, and I continue to use it to grab clothes out of the dryer instead of bending down to get them all out. I even got one for my mom who had back surgery and she uses hers all the time to grab items off the floor or items that are way up high in her closet and cabinets, so this product is fantastic for the pregnant, elderly, surgery patients, and anyone who wants to reduce strain on the back. The grabber is made of aluminum with a plastic squeeze handle that operates the jaws. I really like that the jaws have rubberized, grooved edges on the inside because it gives it great leverage and really holds the items tightly as you squeeze the handle. There is also a little metal magnet near the jaws to help pick up coins and screws, which I've found helpful several times. I'm giving this 4 stars, as much as I love it, because though it claims to pick up up to 8 pounds, it CANNOT handle that much weight and an item of that weight slips from the jaws. I tested this on several occasions with 8 pound workout weights and not only does it slip from the jaws, but trying to pick it up and hold it out from your body to take it from the jaws puts an lot of pressure on your lower back and arms, which in my opinion defeats the purpose of the item! The most I've used this for successfully was about 4 pounds. For me, that is sufficient because I mainly use it to pick my daughter's toys off the floor and to get clean clothes out of the dryer. If you're looking for something to actually hold 8 pounds, this isn't the one for you, but if you're looking for a grabber for lightweight objects, this one is perfect!

I have been using the Unger Professional grabber for about 8 months on a near daily basis. I even took it on a car vacation trip. It has held up perfectly. The other two brands I have tried have broken in less time with less use. I like the little magnet which will pick up small lightweight metal items.

This is the one you want. I had spine surgery and am forbidden, for now, from doing any bending. I bought a "7 piece hip kit" from Amazon at the recommendation of the PT nurse. It came with the omnipresent reacher/grabber tool that has a rotating head and it folds in half. The grabber was the tool I used the most by far. I really liked it until it broke. The problem is the joint where it folds is thin brittle plastic. I was doing laundry and I have a stacked front loading washer/dryer set. The door to the washer is very close to the floor. I was using the grabber to drag out a wet towel to stuff it in the dryer and it broke at the folding joint. I went on line and watched videos where they rated these things and this Unger tool was the top pick. It's built like a tank and picks up heavy things with ease. If I had to come up with a criticism I say the little magnet that is on one of the jaws is pretty weak but, I've got an extended reach magnet so it not a problem. This is the tool you want. At $19.97 you can't beat it.

I wanted to try this different style of trigger -- one of the most common "ergonomic" designs is painful and difficult for me. I have sensory sensitivities so ridges and textures are often difficult. This trigger is smooth plastic without ridges, no texture issue! But it's a little to moderately harder for me to squeeze than my easiest/least strength needed ones (EZ brand). This style trigger/handle might have been so very useful back when i could (barely) still do my own laundry with a top loader washer, though I struggle to really lift anything remotely heavy with any grabbers personally, with one hand and no lock feature. I'm thinking it might be helpful to pick up dry laundry out of deep, thinner laundry hampers cause it's really difficult for me to bend to do that. Also gonna try using it to get things from bottom drawers of fridge. I also wanted a grabber tool that did not fold and this is one of the only ones I've found. I'm homebound with chronic pain so the folding function isn't that useful for me and the first two grabbers I got broke where they folded so I had to tape them up so they weren't foldable anymore anyway. This is also one of only two brands/ones that have a pretty colour over the majority of it which is so much better to me! The pole is a smooth texture and lovely metallic teal. I don't think the blue handle colour goes well with the teal, but I like the colour itself and so I still prefer it over a neutral colour. I like that it has a loop to hang it up, but disappointingly it came do damaged and I didn't know until my dad already opened and removed the packaging for me and gave it to me. It or scraped my hand painfully when I was checking it out cause the hard plastic loop broke and is unaligned. Luckily you can still put it on a nail/hook that way or with the handle since it loops down so much. But I have to figure out how to cover the sharp part. I'd like to return for a new one, but that's difficult. I'm 5'6" and 36 inch works pretty well for me both seated and standing. 32-34 inch does too but 36 is better to me and want to try 40 inch, maybe even longer but not sure about this one's 48 inch. I would not recommend going shorter than 32 inch.

I used this post ankle surgery initially, and it was so helpful. The other brands I tried could not grip as well as the Unger grabber. Now I use it around the house and I love it. Worth the money.

Elderly person with an aged back, can not live without one. Have now purchased six units, work well pick up objects smaller than other brands. Two in house, one in the shed and another in the car. Love this item, great inthe garden also, just can not find it. Oh well buy another one, no make that two.
