I love Nancy Boyles' first book - Closer Reading
I love Nancy Boyles' first book - Closer Reading: Grades 3-6 Better Prep, Smarter Lessons. This book is great too because she has lessons plans for 8 units that you can use and adapt based on her framework for teaching closer reading. With this book, you can also access a companion website where you can watch videos of her teaching the different close reading lessons, and then debriefing those lessons with a group of teachers. While I learned a lot from her first book, the videos really helped me see her framework come to life and I know I will be doing some lessons differently this upcoming school year. Highly recommended.

A Necessary Resource
This book makes me look closer at how I am teaching reading. It is a very practical and useful resource to have. I can easily pull this out and find something to address anything I am considering for a student or group of students. This is one that I have already placed many post-it notes in to refer back to often. This one stays on my desk - not on the shelf.

Nancy has once again been the master chef, showing us the how-to of reading instruction. With this latest book, she invites us to the table for a wonderful gourmet meal treat and through the incredible use of technological advances we can join her as she delivers each course in the the lesson. She carefully explains what we will experience with each entree, deepening our understanding of how best to consider serving and mixing standards. Through the use of carefully paced lessons (that are a hallmark of any coveted workshop session one is privileged to attend with Nancy Boyles) you are treated first-hand to video footage of lessons with real children followed by debriefing sessions with real teachers discussing the pedagogy and structure of the lesson...like a fine wine-tasting with great questions and informed discussions that help refine the experience. This is definitely the go-to book for new teachers learning their craft and the go-to book for veteran teachers honing their craft, going deeper in understanding what the standards might look like in practice. Administrators, I recommend this book as the one book to purchase for each and every teacher on your staff. Professors, this is the book every pre-service teacher should read and devour for their methods course. This book will be the answer for how we help teachers see what good reading instruction, inquiry-based instruction, and lesson planning should look like. The first third of the book is all we really need for this luscious, satisfying meal but the dessert is oh, so delicious and well worth treat of continued reading (with no calories in the consumption!) providing the reader with a treat to several well-crafted lessons ready for delivery. Nancy’s voice is clear, and, as only she can do with her pearls of the wisdom from vast classroom experience, she provides us with the thoughtful ingredients from the master chef she is…Up front, she reminds us that there is “no such thing as a bad answer because it informs what you do next”…I suspect teachers will hold this ingredient dear to their heart and remind themselves that every lesson too gets better with practice and thoughtful reflection and coupled with the fact that this book also provides you with great recipes to guide the process makes it all the better. This is a must read for every practicing and aspiring teacher!
