FERMINTATION; USA MADE CROCK
I was very impressed with the High Quality of the Material. I have yet to make Kraut with this Beauty. Packaged with obvious pride. Sturdiness and heavy duty packing is what impressed me the most. Each piece was wrapped and surrounded as to make the journey well! God Bless and Keep this small Business prosperous is my Prayer.

Beautifully made and excellent quality.
I was surprised at how well this was made. The glaze is absolutely flawless and free from defects. I haven't had a chance to actually use it for fermenting yet but I see no issues at all with it as far as physical construction is concerned so it should work well. Even if I never get around to using it for its intended purpose it's probably worth it just as a display piece.

Massive, but very nice piece
Well 3 gallons is a lot of room, go figure. Bought this as it looked nice enough to keep on the counter-top and it certainly is after receiving it. Just got my first batch going of kraut, but really looking forward to pickles once its growing season. Can't say I know much about fermenting, but I'm very pleased with the appearance and quality of this item. Packaging was great, arrived without any issues in one piece. The weights are not glazed so you have to be very careful putting them in/out of the crock as they have the texture of sandpaper. Would be nice if they had a finish on them to avoid this. EDIT: Well as I stated above I did not know much about fermenting. I had a friend who does understand the process look at it, and they immediately pointed out that the lid does not actually from an airlock. There is a notch cut out in the lid similar to the one you can see on the outside of the crock. If you put enough water in the top of the crock to cover the notch in the lid it just runs out of the notch in the side of the crock. Basically you can't form an airlock on this crock which makes it useless for its intended purpose. I was told by Ohio Stoneware that they are considering a redesign, but this is the way the mold currently is. I don't understand selling an item that does not function for its intended purpose, but this certainly seems like one. I'm certainly going to return mine as if you can't ferment in it, it's just a really large pot. Edit: Meant to update this some time ago, the manufacture was very helpful in resolving this issue and I've now got a perfectly working crock. Very pleased with the purchase, leave it on the counter even when not using it as its such a nice looking piece.

Much better than expected!
I’ve been making sauerkraut for years using an old-fashioned open crock, but this fermentation crock is a total game-changer! It comes as a complete kit, including weights, which is so convenient. The water-seal design on the top is brilliant—it keeps bugs out and maintains the perfect fermentation environment. For the price, the quality and features are outstanding. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in fermentation. You won’t be disappointed!

Ohio, you continue to crush my hopes with disappointment
I was very excited to unbox and start my first kraut batch in this vessel as soon as I saw it shipped to my doorstep. Opened box, inspected, everything looked ready to go. I shredded (6) of the cabbages I had grown over the last 12 weeks and started layering them in, and instead of squeezing with hands (because this vessel is rather deep with a small opening, can't get two arms in there) I began mashing the cabbage/salt slurry with a rolling pin as recommended by about 90% of all the kraut recipes on earth. After about 5 minutes, just as some liquid started releasing from the cabbage, the bottom of the "stone"ware developed a crack and then half the bottom broke off in two large, thin pieces. Further inspection showed that the material at the bottom was only about 1/4" thick. I would say this material is NOT stoneware, rather it is a thin and cheap glazed ceramic at the bottom. The top section with the water seal trough is quite thick and that's truly the only well-made portion of this piece. Also, the lid is hollow (not a solid piece) as I could hear little bits of clay rolling around inside when lifting. All of the stoneware crocks in my life had been well made, thick material, and heavy. This "new" piece of "USA" quality manufacture is indicative of what our hipster culture is becoming. Cheap garbage. Don't waste your money, and more importantly, your time, on this absolute disappointment.

3-Gallon Fermentation Crock Complete Kit This fermentation crock is not only beautiful, it is solidly made with a thick glaze and I am sure will make excellent kraut. The issue with the large notch in the lid (which a few reviews of the past refer to) has been corrected with a much smaller one that resembles that of European made crocks. I was assured by the seller and am of the same opinion, that the new lid will not affect the proper operation of the crock. I have just received it (extremely well packaged BTW) and will be starting my first batch in it next weekend and will give more feedback on the result. I have made fermented product in mason jars before and they are certainly a lot more labour intensive than this will be. And last year I attempted a large batch of sauerkraut in an old crock of my grandmothers and the brine sweated through the glaze, so I had to stop the process early...it still made some good kraut but it felt like time to get a proper crock. I am so looking forward to using this new crock with a water seal. We love sauerkraut and it will certainly be used a number of times a year, especially at harvest time. I'm planning on planting more cabbage this year :) Updated on 19th of March 2016: I have just completed my first batch of sauerkraut in this beautiful water sealed crock and could not be more pleased, it is a total success! Absolutely no mold or slime of any sort and 12+ liter jars of delicious kraut. I can now say that I would have absolutely no reservations in recommending this water sealed crock. There was no issue at all with the lid holding the pressure either :) For more details on the process of fermenting in a water sealed crock on Holly Howe's website and for any and all info on sauerkraut including recipes visit [...] Many blessings.

We’ve been using this fermenting crock for well over a year and it’s lovely. You can make so much sauerkraut from it. I’m sure there is a cheaper alternative out there, but I love the handmade, artesian quality of it. It feels substantial and loved, like something you could pass on for generations.
