Whether you're learning solo or with a group, this guide sets the foundation for confident, lifelong music-making. Review: This book has the basics and isn't too cluttered. - I got a copy of this for a family member who hadn't played the uke for many years and who'd forgotten the chords, strumming techniques and other basics. (At least she said she forgot them; I've heard her playing ukes while she thought I was busy checking out the guitars in another room of the music store, but won't press the issue.) I'd first bought her Easy Songs For Ukulele Supplementary Songbook To Hal Leonard Ukulele Method for but that proved to be daunting since she was not confident on her basics. This book is designed for the rank beginner and is written in such a manner that for each lesson the beginner can memorize a basic learning step. A player who's otherwise musically inclined won't be bored, since many of the pages incorporate both a basic lesson and amplification of that lesson. So it would appeal to the player seeking a refresher course as well. It is laid out in a logical stepwise fashion and can be used as a reference for the songbook. There is the fear factor whenever you have a shy adult learning music. (Don't get me started about this - it seems that every great musician has at least one story about an a-hole elementary school teacher who told them they were awful and should never sing nor play any more.) Anyway, once the fearful student knows that this is a book which is amenable to their own re--design of the lessons to fit their learning style, they will quickly find they can do just that. This book also goes well as a companion reference, once the student finds the right YouTube teacher. I find YouTube to be an extraordinarily good learning tool for expanding my Irish fiddle tune repertory and my family member has found one excellent and several good uke teachers. I've read some negative comments about the chord charts. I can only say they should wait a few years, then they will find that having chord charts plus lessons in a single book reduces a good bit of clutter. I really like having the chord charts, since I measure my music books by bookshelf-feet. Review: Good reference book for all levels - I started learning how to play ukelele learning my Mom's Hal Leonard standard book 1, but that only contains a single page of chords. When I saw this expanded version in large format, I knew I would never be able to play 1000 chords, but it's still nice to have as reference. I appreciate having online access to the songs in the book and to be able to slow them down to my learning pace.

Good with a little reserve
A very good primer, being the first in a series. There are so many tutorial resources via the internet, wit articles and videos galore, I purchased this book to give me a structure for learning the basics. I like that you get right into some rudiments of fingerstyle, which is what I want to be able to do someday. The exercises are simple but also build confidence and skill. So his book gets four "thumbs" up. Why not five? Well over half of the book are charts of chords. I can get chord charts all over the place and I feel that more space could have been devoted to instruction. The beginning student is not going to need all of these chords at this point since they are still getting the basics down pat. I felt that their inclusion served as padding, so that instead of a 56 page book, you get a 142 page book. I'm considering getting the next method book in the series and would be grossly disappointed if this was repeated.

Great beginner book
Great as an entry level book, but if you already know the basics of music notation then I would skip to book #2 in the series. It’s a great gift for somebody getting started with the ukulele.

Good first book for new ukulele players.
Great beginner’s book for ukulele players. Audio files accessable from the publisher’s webpage. Would be nice if they had some video files to illustrate the techniques used.
