I just love Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet guides never fail. They are perfect for my style of travel, for the info I like to get. I hope LP stays away from their new 'Experience' format, though. I was not a fan of that at all.

A really useful guide to a fascinating country
I have been fortunate enough to visit Tibet a couple of times and am planning another, longer trip, so I bought an updated guide. As another reviewer has stated, this book is focussed on the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) as defined by the Chinese Government. I think that this will suit most travellers who will likely be visiting Lhasa, Shigatze, Everest Base Camp. It is full of a lot of historical and cultural information as well as health advice - all of which it is important to read. A simple thing is that if the Chinese authorities find this book in your luggage they will very likely confiscate it. Bury it in you bag somewhere deep. If you are planning a trip to the TAR I would highly recommend having a read of this book first. I'm glad that I did. My Tibetan guide was fascinated to see my previous edition on my last visit - they get get very little information from the outside world regarding the understanding of what has happened and is happening in Tibet.

Out of date
Visited Tibet May 2025. Original base camp now closed down and a new one is 3km further away so the book is wrong. Just one of the things. The train from Xining now has plug points and the corridor lights are on so you don’t need a battery pack or a torch as mentioned. It needs updating

Misleading book title - only covers the TAR
The book title "Tibet" is misleading, and insensitive to the Tibetan people. This book should be called "The Tibetan Autonomous Region of China". It doesn't cover at all the large parts of Tibet that have been subsumed into other Chinese provinces (and in which you can travel independently, without a guide, and so for which you might need a good guide book). Unfortunately it's therefore of little use to me. It's disappointing that this isn't made clear. An accurate title would also avoid causing offence.
