Very useful compact lantern
I also have the 3 D-cell version, which also works quite well, but this has quickly become my go-to work light. It's the perfect size to tuck into relatively small spaces and provide even light, while still having the features of a full-size lantern, like a proper diffuser. It's also something that, unlike a larger lantern, is hardly noticeable when packed for a trip or in an emergency kit, but provides full-lantern versatility and compares pretty favorably on light output. Even the dimmest setting I've found has been adequate for close-in work. I use low-discharge NIMH batteries in it, and it seems to provide decent battery life and steady output. The battery loading is also better-designed than similar models I've used, and batteries can be swapped quickly if needed. The rubberized coating also seems to protect it from getting bumped around, it's survived some short drops and still works fine. Probably the best all-around lantern I've used so far in this form factor.

You get what you pay for. Great features and quality.
I had a hard time choosing between the normal size (large) Siege and this AA Siege. In the end I chose the AA version because for me I needed a lantern to be multifunctional based on what I'm doing. I will be using this for camping with a boat to halt items. I will be using this with a canoe and need to pack smarter and lighter. I will be using this as a light when hiking. And I will also use it at home during power outages. So for me it seemed smarter to go with the lightest choice the AA. This little lantern is AWESOME! I was very pleased with its performance. In the past I've worn a headlamp for any external light that I needed, but this little lantern worked so much better. I didn't have plans on using this for any of my hiking adventures, but it could be since the size and weight are minimal. I'm very pleased with the lanterns light output, and should only have to use it on the low setting for most occasions. You can attach it to the nylon loop, that's located in most tents, at the very top of the roof by using the D ring style spring clip located at the bottom of the lantern, or just place it in the tents attic net. The D ring makes this lantern usable in most any situation and really was the selling point for me along with waterproof / floatable, since I canoe. The weight with batteries is right at 8 oz. according to my scale. On Streamlight's website it says 8.8 oz. I've attached some photos that will show the lantern with a tape measure, and a deck of cards for size comparison. Overall I think this product is great and has great features. It is a little pricy but Amazon had a great price on them much cheaper than the local stores. For functionality, weight, and features it's well worth it.

Excellent product
Think of this as a personal lantern and not a camp space lantern. It is bright enough to light up a camp sight but not as well as some larger lanterns. For personal use, hanging in the tent, night boating, or light backpack camping this is an excellent product. My two year old fell in love with it before I ever got to take it outdoors and I can attest that it drops well without damage. It is light, sturdy, and uses AA batteries which are all pluses for me. It floats and has very sturdy accessories like the carabiner hook for hanging this in your tent or from any tether or belt. The red light feature is a nice plus, especially for hunting night crawlers (red light doesn't cause worms to react) and seeing in a tent without waking anyone up. It also has an emergency SOS flash pattern. So nice features and very well sealed and durable. I used it for 4 nights of camping and didn't give battery life a second thought. That was after my kids played with it days ahead of that. Excellent product. I am buying a second one.

Impressive Little Lantern!
11/21/25 UPDATE: At the first battery change, I did end up carving a triangular notch in the plastic "lip" above the odd-man-up battery compartment. This readily identifies by feel alone which battery is inserted + up! A neat fix that in no way affects the integrity of the lamp-body or the way it seals out the elements. I'll likely buy another! This is highly preliminary, as I just received it. But as my British friends would put it, this is a very neat bit of kit! It's compact, being smaller than a 12 oz. beer can. But it's light output that matters, and it's plenty bright for anything I'm about to use it for. There are three white light output modes with excellent runtime duration (see specs) considering its three AA cell power source. The build quality is impressive--especially at this price. No money is wasted on fancy gift boxes or expensive graphics packaging. It comes in a plastic bag with the globe wrapped, and a retail pegboard hanger in place. You're paying for product. Note: The instructions (which are lucid) are folded up inside the battery compartment. Both the battery compartment and frosted globe assembly twist-off. A solid "click" lets you know when they're properly closed. Streamlight is well known for their robust weapon lights and tactical flashlights, and while this isn't built to those specs, so far I'd say you'd have to try to break this thing under any reasonable use. I like the red light feature, as I do astronomy from time to time. The red light mode offers a flashing universal SOS (i.e., 3 dots, 3 dashes, 3 dots) signal. Pretty slick! Internally, the light is evenly redistributed via an inverted conical reflector/fresnel lens assembly. The glow through the frosted shade is even, with no real hot spots. The light is fine, though I'd prefer a warmer white, but that's me. The light control button has an LED battery status indicator that operates when the lantern's on. Green = All Good, Yellow = Think About Battery Replacement, Red = Batteries Nearly Gone, Flashing Red = Change Batteries! Again, pretty slick! Note: This model doesn't have the "Here I Am!" flashing locator light when the lantern's off. All lamps are LED's (Light Emitting Diodes), so barring any defects, they should outlast the owner. And of course, power efficiency is maximized. FYI for preppers: This lamp would NOT be EMP-proof! There are two hangers: 1) The fold-down carrying handle, which will also hook onto a line or a smaller tree branch. And 2) A folding hanger in the bottom battery cover, with a built-in carabiner for secure attachment. The lantern can be used without the frosted globe. This might be desirable when hanging the light inverted, as inside a tent, say The lantern is said to "float" with the globe in place; so serious water/weather resistance is implied. Battery Installation. Not exactly slick. But certainly workable, and a vast improvement over the atrocious Rayovac design other reviewers have mentioned (I threw both of mine away). Two of the AA cells face downwards into the cavity and one faces up. The problem is is that all three holes are identical-looking without careful inspection. And careful inspection in the dark requires shining a light down inside the three holes. See where I'm going here? Also, the "graphic" inside the holes showing battery orientation is tiny, requiring a flashlight to see it. This could be improved with two very noticeable " - " and one " + " indicator molded into the plastic where the batteries go, or even better, a "triangular opening" just at the top of the one " + " battery opening (Do I have to design everything?). I may decide to take a small triangular file and "mark" the one " + " opening. It pains me, but the battery thingy costs this product a star. A pity since they pretty much nailed everything else. Still, I nonetheless like this little lantern, and barring any product failures, I may buy another for downstairs. Equipped with Lithium Batteries, this would be a decent choice for an auto emergency kit. RB

Super bright, super small, super well made, works great with rechargeable batteries
Fantastic product. In this category there seems to be a lot of cheap junk, and a few $$$ things that are really well made. Not much in between. This is $$$ and very well made. Just the feel of the parts is excellent. And the design is superb. Makes a great lantern. Can hang from a cord or an edge. We bought it for power outages, but if we still camped, it would be perfect for camping. The lantern is surprisingly small. Slightly taller than a soda can and definitely thinner. It's smaller than I had expected. Also, the diffuser comes off, and the remaining stub of the light works well in the hand as a very bright light either for work or for searching the floor for lost items. (Removing the diffuser improves brightness, but there is a lot of glare. It works well with rechargeable batteries. Brand makes a difference. With some Powerex batteries it was quite good, but with the Sanyo Eneloop batteries it was noticeably brighter. All in all, one of the most superior products of any kind I have had the pleasure to own. If it were just a bit cheaper I would buy one for each car as an emergency light. As is, an excellent choice for camping or for emergencies.

Just wow.
This little guy is awesome! I just received it and I was surprised at how compact and well made it is. I do a decent amount of camping and backpacking and I will always bring this one. I have a few battery lanterns as well as camp fuel and propane lanterns that I have collected over the years and this one is literally perfect. I have a mini butane lantern that I used for backpacking and this is it's replacement by far. Before writing this review I just bought the 3XD version of this one. Giving my other lanterns away as presents. ;) At this point I realize that my review isn't helpful. Pluses: compact, light, multiple hanging options, multiple light modes including a low red light. Can hang it off your pack or from the ceiling of your tent. Take off the lantern part and can be used as a friggin bright flashlight. Very rurable and it is waterproof and floats with the lantern on. Very well thought out piece of gear.

Great little lantern
I purchased this lantern for power outages and such. It has three levels of brightness and works on 3 AA batteries. It's quite compact but emits quite a bit of light. I purchased it in Jan, 2016 and it worked fine up until a few weeks ago. I knocked it over on a cement floor fixing something and it wouldn't turn on any longer. I tried and tried but it would not light. I contacted the Streamlight company on their website and filled out a repair form and mailed it to them on Saturday. Less then one week later they sent me back a brand new lantern and I am thrilled. Great company and great lantern.
