Does the bowl need a filter of any kind, or will the 'tobacco' just combust without falling through?

The bowl doesn’t want a filter, the hole should be small enough that the ‘tobacco’ acts as the filter.

Can anyone tell me what the blue plastic thing is and how to use it

It’s used to secure the connection between the bowl and the bong. You don’t need to use it but it might give you piece of mind if you start using expensive bangers and bowls.
