Our Man in Havana is the great Graham Greene's saucy adaptation of his own novel, starring the singular Alec Guinness as a vacuum-cleaner salesman in pre-revolutionary Cuba, bizarrely recruited as a British Intelligence spy. As his imagination turns out to be more highly developed that his espionage skills, the plot thickens. An extraordinary cast also includes Noel Coward, Burl Ives, Maureen O'Hara, Ernie Kovacs and Ralph Richardson. Directed by Carol Reed. Review: A Well Done Movie! - I really enjoyed watching this movie. This "spy" movie starts out with a light hearted somewhat comedic tone, and then slowly progresses to a more serious nature. The acing is very good, especially Alec Guinness. And of course, Carol Reed did a great job directing the movie (based on a Grahame Greene novel). I should also mention that the quality of the Blu Ray disc is excellent! Review: Superb Carol Reed - Graham Green collaboration! - One of my all time favorite films. Alec Guinness Noel Coward Maureen OโHara Ernie Kovacs - filmed in Cuba just after the revolution by Carol Reed. Fine music, a film I could watch over and over and I have. 5 stars and definitely on my top 5 all time list.

Havana ca. 1958...
I saw this when it was released, and I was in high school... This is a remarkably fine-grained digital transfer. Can't believe it's only now available on Blu! If you're planning a Havana vacation now, be sure to see this first...

It's a spoof, not a serious spy movie (for starters)
Didn't care for it much. The cast was great, the acting was solid, but the script was just not very interesting. Not very believable. Not very much of anything. I don't care how famous the author is/was, it just wasn't very interesting. And a great cast can only fix that so much. If I had it to do all over again, I would not have bought the movie and, if I had bought it, I would not have wasted the time watching it.

Overrated Schizophrenic Spy Comedy? or Drama? or What?
This is one of those films I'd been looking forward to seeing for years, but the price was prohibitive. Finally, the Twilight Time Bluray was on sale, and I nabbed it. PRESENTATION: gorgeous, Crystal clear black and white Cinemascope. Excellent sound. ***** CONTENT: Now, here's my reservations. The film , at least to me, can't seem to settle on whether it's a comedy , a political satire or a drama. The characters are generally off-putting, especially Alex Guiness' annoying daughter (played by a way too old and sexy Jo Morrow, for the coquettish Catholic school girl she's supposed to be.). Ernie Kovacs plays a really creepy sadistic chief of police. Maureen O'Hara plays a character who supposedly falls in love with Alex Guiness, though I can't imagine why. I still haven't figured out what the hell Burl Ives is supposed to be. All in all, none of the characters really elicit any sympathy, so you don't care what happens to them. The last 1/3 of the film goes off on a confusing tangent and the ending is just plain stupid. I'd give the film **. All in all, a strangely unappealing movie on Blueray that I'd only give a 2 1/2 .
