It's a perfect practice sword
This thing is surprisingly sturdy. I started with slamming it against my mattress as hard as I could then went outside and beat it against a tree and nothing bad happened. It took some scuff marks but nothing bent or rattled after. If I went as hard as I could and kept going I'm sure it would break, but it took three good whacks so I'm sure it'd handle some light sparring all day. It's made really well. I was worried the handle would just be a cylinder but it's a nice oval shape, the plastic handle fills the hand nicely. The sections of the blade are almost as thick as a butterknife, so the whole thing has some weight to it and it certainly doesn't feel flimsy. It feels premium, as much as a collapsible sword can. The tassle feels cheap, but it's just decoration you don't even have to attach. Unfortunately because of the nature of the pieces sliding against each other there are some small scuff marks where the shiny metal looks worn down, and no doubt there will only be more of those with more use but what's a sword without some battle damage right?Be careful when extending the blade. The instructions recommend just holding the handle and swinging it out. That's what I tried and it was nearly impossible to close it again. Those sections lock together VERY well. I had to stab it into the floor with all my weight to collapse it. You're better off letting it fall open then tugging on it to secure it open.

Great sword - excellent customer service!
***ANOTHER UPDATE*** - the seller did, indeed, send a replacement and it is much better! Sturdy, stays extended, and feels balanced. What a nice difference! Customer service is simply unbeatable!**UPDATE PENDING** The seller has been AMAZING in communication and understanding. They are shipping us out a replacement sword. We will see if this one is sturdier and less loose than what we have and will update the review accordingly. GREAT customer service experience!**This sword looked amazing and ready to dazzle for a birthday gift. Leather case, extendable sword, classy tassel. Sadly, the disappointment was very real. The blade itself is so flimsy. I don't understand the reviews that claim it's quality and balanced. It feels like plastic and ready to bend and break at any minute. I would be afraid to use it all. For $45, I expected a very sturdy worthy sword. Perhaps it's not possible because of the extendable nature of the sword, but buyers need to be aware that this is more like a little toy for a kid. The seller kindly reached out (before it even arrived) to see if we were happy with it. We did gently let them know our experience and suggestions for improvement since they asked. It's too bad because it is such a unique design. I really wanted to like this!

very good tai chi practice sword
This sword is for tai chi sword practice, and it is very good for that. The majority of collapsible swords seem flimsy, and much too light. For a collapsible sword, this seems substantial and made well for this type of item. The balance is good. It is heavier than other collapsible (which is good), but could be heavier still. One eventually wishes to use a full-length sword in this practice, and they are heavier than even this model. I would also have liked a more rounded hand-grip. All this said, I still like this quite a lot for what it is designed to do -use in practice. And collapsibles won't scare the beginners and those in other classes.

Kung Fu Training Sword - Worth The Money
This product is ideal for someone that travels and wants to practice the sword. It packs well and the weight in hand is very balanced. The handle is a little narrow for people with big hands but still a decent grip. The materials are actually well made and the telescoping mechanism is sturdy. This is really only for someone who wants to train a form not spar or hit things with it as it will bend easy. When collapsing it, just use the weight of the sword and gently tap downward on the ground. Don't manually extend it and pull out the sections. Just let the weight of it hold itself when you open it up. I would buy this product again. The video is a traditional Chinese sword form.

Very nice traveling sword
I was pleased to see it was as described. The sword collapses. The collapsing mechanism works smoothly, and repeatedly. The catches reliably hold the sword open or closed. The construction is solid. The weight is good. The balance is pretty good, especially for a collapsing sword. For $45, this is an excellent purchase.Extras: The tassel is an acceptable mass market tassel, strong materials, and is well made.I especially appreciate the addition of the carrying case. It is a plain black zippered case about the size of a small toiletry bag. When the sword is collapsed and inside the case, it is completely discreet and unremarkable. No one will give it a second glance. Which is exactly what I want - no attention, no questions, no inspections.

Defective and returned
Mass produced goods suffer without effective quality control. Apparently, I got an unlucky product along with many of the others who are posting similar reviews. On receipt, the sword extended and collapsed as advertised. The second time I used it, two weeks later (in my first class), the outer two sections repeatedly collapsed during class, and the third section (the part closest to the handle) wouldn’t collapse but with ridiculously severe slamming—so severe, i waiting until I was home to keep trying. I extended it again, and sure enough, the same section required the same stupid amount of slamming to collapse.

Good quality but handle not comfortable
The handle is not good to hold. Too small and slippery.

The best made retractable practice sword.
I have seen a lot of retractable practice swords. All are rather shoddy in materials and workmanship and are generally too short for the average American caucasian. Toys and not well made toys at that. This one is a serious piece of practice equipment. It comes in a range of sizes and is absolutely the best retractable I have ever seen - by far! It is sturdily built, of excellent quality materials. I believe that it will literally last a lifetime of daily use. The grip is comfortable. Even the weight and balance is correct. Worth every penny!

Good product, but with a tricky telescopic mechanism that requires careful handling.
This sword is very sturdy; the weight, balance, and grip are excellent. The materials used aren't cheap, but the telescopic mechanism often gets stuck or closes unexpectedly. After the second day of use, the first and last segments were jammed. I managed to free them with WD-40. This worked very well. Afterward, I was very careful when opening the sword; I pulled on each segment by hand, one after the other, and did the same to close it. At present, I don't know if this will permanently solve the problem. One thing is certain: you absolutely must NOT try to open it by giving the handle a sharp blow and applying strong downward force; this will jam everything.Despite the positive aspects for the rest, the telescopic mechanism needs improvement, as there is a real problem.I didn't want to exchange this sword because of its other qualities, but I'll see with use if the problem is too significant in the future and will have to get another one.

Closing of the sword
Just received my PhysCool Extendable Chinese Taichi Sword and these are my observations. Opening/extending the sword is smooth but closing is difficult (until now I cannot close the last farthest section of the sword). I'll leave it later when I reach home. But overall, it feels like a sturdy sword. Now I can review back my Taichi sword exercise.
