Josef Sudek: The Legacy of a Deeper Vision

Wonderful book, wonderful condition
I would urge anyone interested in photography to acquire this book. The photos are rewarding, to be sure, and the editorial material is consistently of a high order. This material includes a Tribute from Anna Farova, Sudek's assistant for many years, and Recollections from John Banville's Pragues Pictures (a book one should acquire separately, by all means). I was also very pleased with the service from the Book Depository: prompt service and mint condition.

Rich, sumptuous, joyful, disorienting.
And that's just the cover.Came in it's own shrink, wrap, and I can only look into the book to read and view for a few moments ant then I have to go off and think about it.First time I ever saw the words "DSLR" and "Sudek" on the same page, but that is what cameras are these days, digitals, except all 10 of mine, which are nothing but film cameras, thank you.Anyways there actually is a photo of his Kodak panorama camera, which I have studied intensely, thank you.

What a glorious book
I already had over a dozen Sudek books when I was considering whether I needed this one, and that's not counting books with significant inclusion of Sudek images. This book has turned out to be one of the most rewarding. If I had too choose to keep only one Sudek book, I'm not sure I could part with "The Window of My Studio," which helped me so much during my leukemia convalescence, or "Labyrinths" or "Pigment Prints," or ... or maybe that is a pointless exercise, more likely to cause pain than bring enlightenment. Not that I claim that Sudek's work has brought me enlightenment. More, it has brought me some inner feeling that is difficult to describe. For me his work does not require explanation or understanding, it does not exist on a yardstick ranging from depth to superficiality, it resonates on a different scale. As I page through this, or any of my Sudek books, I feel something akin to inspiration to emulate - not his vision, but perhaps his attitude towards his vision? As it has been getting darker earlier this fall, my photography has been returning to some of those spiritual paths. I thank Josef Sudek's work for its help in the past, and feel reinvigorated for the future. I doubt anyone reading this review doesn't already know quite a bit about Sudek. You are probably trying to decide whether this book is worth the cost, whether for a first Sudek book, or yet another Sudek book. If you have read this far, I think I can say unequivocally yes, it is well worth acquiring.
