I hooked it up to my sanyo tv it did not come on

If there is an option for av use that.. I have to use that and the first time I used it I had to select av and turn it off and back on

will this work on a modern style tv. ?

Yes. I have a smart lg tv and works just fine. You use the 3 colored round end cables to attach it to the back of the tv and it comes on the screen. I used component 2 for the input. I didn't need to purchase any extra cables.
