I bought this computer last July, so it's been almost a year. It's a wonderful laptop! It continuously works lightning fast, and I've had no issues with how it runs at all. I multi-task on a rather extreme basis, and this thing still keeps up with me. The touchscreen works very well... better than the Acer touchscreen laptop that my husband has. On his, we sometimes have to touch it 2 or 3 times for the computer to figure out what we're trying to click, but this one always seems to know. (It appears to be a software difference, not a hardware difference because his laptop does register the touch with the little circle thing it does, it just doesn't seem to realize that we're trying to click the box 1mm away.) The screen brightness does not work well in sunlight, but I knew that buying it. I also knew the speakers weren't that good, which isn't an issue for me... I usually have headphones and it's great through those. It's also heavy, but that's what you get when you want a 15.6" laptop. It's still lighter than my old HP of the same size. It functions great and is fast, which is what I care about. The only thing that was less than perfect was that the letters wore off some of the keys only 4 months into owning it. My kids say it's my fault... most laptops don't have to withstand someone who types 100wpm and works on it for 15 hours/day... but my old HP laptop's keys usually lasted about 1 1/2 years before they were wearing off. I'd let it go for another 6 months or so until people wanting to borrow the laptop complained that they couldn't find the letters, and then I'd buy a $30 keyboard off eBay, open up the thing, replace the keyboard, and keep on going. I did that 3 times for that laptop. So I consider the letters and coating on these Asus keys to be lower quality. Unfortunately, as of right now, you cannot buy replacement keys or keyboards for this laptop... so I contacted Asus about the warranty. This is why I'm still giving 5-stars despite the keyboard issue... I contacted Asus about it, and they gave me an RMA with a postage-paid FedEx ground label with no problems. I sent it back (which took 5 days from OH to CA), and they signed for the laptop at 7:30am last Thursday. They sent it back to FedEx at 11:30pm the next day... and paid for expedited shipping back to me. And yes, it is my actual laptop. When they shipped it back so fast, I was slightly concerned that they'd swapped it out for another unit, but nope. It's mine with a new keyboard. I was not expecting 30-hour turnaround, nor was I expecting expedited shipping back to me, but I'm sure happy about it!

I was looking for either a new laptop, 2-in-1, or MacBook to do things that just aren't possible on my iPad. After weeks of searching, I took the plunge with the ASUS TP500LA, which was half the price of the MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display I had downselected as the other finalist. I am very happy with the ASUS - very nice looking, excellent build quality, great keyboard layout, and setup at home was the easiest I have ever experienced with any computer . Despite reviews of ASUS sister products claiming the Wi-Fi is slow, the Wi-Fi on my unit is crazy fast, display is outstanding, boot up is about 15 seconds, power down is about 5 seconds. I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8.1, but I got around that by installing Stardock Start8, a $5 program with a 30 day free trial that emulates Windows 7 but give you the flexibility to access the Win 8.1 interface if you want. Only cons: No backlit keyboard, battery life is 5-6 hours (9 for the MacBook Pro), a tad heavy at 5 lbs (3.5 for the MacBook Pro), but you know all of this going into the purchase, which for me, was worth saving $800. Amazon shipping was amazing - I chose the 1 day option ($7 for Prime members), which shipped from CA at 8 pm the night before and arrived at my doorstep in CT at 2 pm the next day (how the heck do they do that for $7?). Anyway, no regrets at all for this purchase - would do it again in a heartbeat!

I made sure to test everything on this device for the sake of this review. All of the USB ports, bluetooth, HDMI, webcam, built in mic, SD card reader, headphone/microphone jack, touchpad, and touchscreen work as intended. This device does everything that I wanted and even a bit more. It's great for multitasking; however, if you're downloading or transferring anything onto the hard drive, expect it to slow down the laptop a bit. After all, it is a HDD. While it is nice how it also functions as a tablet, it isn't as lightweight as one, so you'll probably end up resting it on your lap, table, or desk. The monitor on the device only supports 1366x768 for its max resolution, but it could still provide a 1920x1080 resolution on a secondary monitor, as I tested when connecting the device to my TV. If you have any interest in Windows 10, you'll be happy to know that mine did come with a free upgrade to Windows 10. It is probably worth noting that when I started my laptop up the first time, it was not working as I had hoped. It was slow and some of the software support was either absent or not functioning properly. As a result, I ended up resetting the computer to its factory default. Fortunately, that appeared to fix the problem, as the computer was much faster, and the touchpad settings that was absent previously was in my system tray. While you could technically play some games on the device, keep in mind that it uses an integrated graphics card; therefore, while it may run some games, you'll probably have to play with lower quality graphic settings. It definitely wasn't made for more demanding and higher quality games. In fact, it isn't really intended to be used as a gaming laptop, as such laptops generally have their own dedicated video cards. One of the problems I noticed from other reviews was with the device's built-in wireless adapter. While it does connect to the wireless network at my home, the range is somewhat lacking. The connection seems to cut off occasionally when I'm at the farthest point in my home from the router (I want to say it's about 35 ft). I'm certain it's the laptop, and not my router, because I've connected other devices from the same range with no problem, including my Kindle Fire HDX and even my 9 year old laptop (so severely outdated, the OS couldn't be updated to anything beyond Windows XP, which led to the purchase of this device). If this can be seen as a potential problem for you, you may wish to consider buying a USB wireless adapter to extend its range. On a minor side note, it kind of bothers me that the SD card sticks out of the reader. I was hoping it went into the device completely with like a push and click lock, but half of the card sticks out of the device. This concerns me only because I worry something or someone could come along and bump the card in a way that could potentially damage the card and/or the card reader. Still, I only plan to really use this when I'm uploading pictures from my camera, so it's not really a deal breaker. Overall, I'm fairly happy with this laptop. It's well suited for the things I use it for (watching movies/videos, listening to music, streaming, web surfing, apps, and general document/spreadsheet work). While there is a minor problem with the wireless adapter and the software, I didn't really consider it too problematic. Still, there is definitely room for improvement. Again, gaming is possible on the device, but it definitely won't play as good as a device with a dedicated graphics card, so expect performance drawbacks for the more demanding games. That aside, it was worth the price I paid for it (which is roughly $550), but I honestly wouldn't justify purchasing this device at its current $800 price. Granted, since 2-in-1's are a new breed of laptop, it might justify its $800 price tag for anyone else. My personal preference for a laptop with a lower end i7 processor such as this one is to spend around $700 at most. Anything lower is definitely a steal. - 2025 Update So... when I wrote this review, it was originally like 10 years ago... Surprisingly, while my laptop is still running, I can't really recommend it currently, simply because there's a lot of better alternatives for a similar price. Naturally, this laptop won't be able to support Windows 11, which means it's pretty much obsolete, unless you intend to use a different operating system aside from Windows 10. Also, it uses a wireless g adapter for internet, which was before dual band, wifi 6, 6e, and the current standard: wifi 7 (which is normally supported by Windows 11 anyway). Ideally, you're going to need something like a usb wifi adapter, or a hard ethernet cable connection (which can still support up to an impressive 1gbps). Still, because of the CPU's age, you're likely to experience system lag to a point where it might not even keep up with your internet. For its time, this was a great laptop, but currently, I'd definitely look for something with more modern hardware. This CPU has only 2 cores, and it's a 5th generation i7 processor. We're currently in the 14th generation of i7s, which normally can have up to 20 cores (10x's the speed of this CPU). As of this update to my review, 15th gen i7s are just around the corner. So why come back to this product page or even this review? I was curious about the ethernet support, because I'm not getting the full speeds my internet provides when this is connected to my modem. I've pretty much converted this device into a media player for my TV, but it's definitely starting to feel more like a modern chromebook worth less than $200. Otherwise, it's about as reliable as any other laptop. Through my ownership, I've had to replace the battery twice, change the hard drive twice (which was ultimately swapped to a SSD), swap out the built-in speakers, and accept the ceasing function of some of the keyboard keys (which is definitely not worth repairing now). It's impressive to see it operating after 10 years of ownership, considering that's about how long CPUs normally last. Once Microsoft stops supporting Windows 10, I'll probably consider a new operating system (assuming this device is still working). For now, I'll continue using it watch movies and other videos online until it finally hits the grave.

Okay machine. Product description stated that it would ship with windows 8. Instead, it shipped with windows 10. Had an issue of the computer freezing up for 10-90 seconds which was driving me a little nuts. After uninstalling Microsoft news the problem vanished. May have worked fine if it was shipped with windows 8 installed (as advertised) but I have no way to know. Viewing display from different angles could be better and doesn't make for a very good tablet mode experience. More of sit down in front of kind of display. Otherwise, seems to work fine for a student as long as the freezing issue is resolved.

The excitement I had to get a top of the line touchscreen notebook quickly ebbed as the wireless card in the laptop died within 24 hours. No recourse except to send it to ASUS for repair which is leaving me without a notebook (ASUS did not offer an exchange, only a repair - despite the fact that I had purchased the notebook less than 72 hours previously). In their favor, they did pay for shipping (FedEx Ground), but now I have to wait until they get the laptop, diagnose the issue, and return it. I'm not sure how long that is going to take. Being more than a noob at computers, I tried just about everything to figure out if it was something I was doing - reloaded drivers, uninstalled the device and reinstalled it, shut down the computer and restarted, connected via wired connection (that worked fine), and finally installed a USB WiFi which worked flawlessly. Final diagnosis: the wireless card is faulty - called ASUS who told me to return the laptop for repair. Very disappointing quality control so we'll see how it goes when I get the notebook back from repair (I will update this review when it comes back). My recommendation at this point is beware this may not be the notebook that ASUS wants you to think it is. UPDATE: Sent the laptop to ASUS for repair. They replaced the 802.11 G/G/N board, but didn't try to replicate the problem using the new board, if they had, they would have seen that the replacement is just as bad as the original. Sad to say if you want a fast internet connection, do not buy this laptop since you will have to invest in an external USB WiFi in order to actually use it. I think the next step is to get a refund from Amazon. UPDATE (New) After doing some research trying to find a different driver, apparently Windows 8.1 and the Qualcaomm Atheros AR946x do not play well together. Shame on ASUS for not telling anyone that! It would have made a difference in purchase if they (ASUS) had admitted that their WiFi device didn't work on Windows 8.1. I can't test it on Windows 10 since W10 is so new, but in the limited tests I was able to do, the same problem exists with Windows 10 as with Windows 8.1. Come on ASUS with all the money you're making on laptops, shouldn't you be able to 1. ADMIT there is a problem. and 2. FIX IT.

Loved this product... thin, fairly light weight with GREAT performance. Was concerned with Windows 8 at first after hearing all the complaints. Instead I found Windows 8 to be a good platform... I had it figured out in about a day of playing with it. Games are crisp, programs run well with little slow down. Battery life is INCREDIBLE. I enjoy the flip-screen mode but, as far as acting as a tablet, it is TOO BIG! The tablet mode has to be used sitting... its lunky to try to use walking around studying notes.

I debated the rating to give this product for a long time. Ultimately though, I had to choose to rate it based off of what was promised vs. what was actually received and Amazon's lack of response. I did give it one extra star, which is explained at the bottom. As shown in the picture with multiple screenshots, the product advertises FIVE SEPARATE TIMES that it is a Windows 8 laptop, the OS is Windows 8. Five times. The product name does state "Free upgrade to Windows 10", but given the fact that Microsoft is allowing all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade to 10 for free, it seemed like it was just stating the obvious. I expected a Windows 8 laptop that I could upgrade to Windows 10 if I so desired. In reality I received a Windows 10 machine with NO option to have Windows 8. Amazon customer service said I could return it and kindly e-mailed me links to two other laptops I could consider, neither of which was very comparable - one was not a flip screen and cost 1.5 times more than this one. I spoke to Amazon twice regarding the issue with this listing, both times repeating myself that this listing needs to be amended as it is not accurate. Both times I was assured they would look into it. However, it is still being sold as a Windows 8 laptop when that is not what it is. If you are looking for a Windows 8 laptop, do NOT buy this one! The operating system is what makes a computer function. If the OS is not what the listing states it doesn't matter how well the laptop functions because it's operating on a different OS than described. Actually...that makes 6 times it says it's a Windows 8 computer because the picture shows the Windows 8 start page, NOT Windows 10. The one extra star above the lowest rating is because the touch screen has good responsiveness and is very accurate without any setting up, the flip function seems sturdy (seems because I haven't used it that much yet - can't guarantee how it does over any length of time), and the boot up is nice and speedy. A deceitful listing does not warrant any higher though.

Bought this Laptop, had trouble with the wireless network software with the Qualcaomm Atheros AR946x, apparently some are loaded with outdated software. Very simple fix, update the driver for Qualcaomm Atheros AR946x at: https://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=82&system=8 Download the latest version Dec 2014, extract the files, uninstall the old driver and install the new version by searching your computer and selecting the correct file to use. I was amazed at how well the laptop works now. Very happy. It seems the old drivers on some of the units where not the latest updated versions. Its kind of frustrating to do this, but it works and is better then shipping a new laptop back to ASUS or Amazon. Best laptop I have owned so far.
