Hand Lettering for Faith: A Christian Workbook for Creating Inspired Art

Somehow her books are easier for me to learn from than others (I have several). I think part of it is that I am not as interested in "learning" as I am in "doing." I don't want to become a letterer. I just want to hand letter something reasonable (not awful) on the back of an envelope or something. With this book, I can sit down and do it. Maybe not perfectly, but certainly well enough for my purposes. This book (and all of hers) would work fine if someone did want to develop a more enduring and higher level skill because she also teaches principles, including principles of layout. Additionally, you learn to draw (or more specifically, to create simple doodles). There are projects and the book is somewhat more helpful when you want to create those projects but a bit more limited if you want to learn lettering in general. I mean this literally: it is not that it is unhelpful if you want to learn alphabets in general, but if you are looking for a wide variety of alphabets (where you have the entire alphabet) there are other books for that and it might be beneficial to at least supplement your collection with such books. The chalk lettering books can sometimes be helpful for that purpose (hand lettering as she teaches and chalk lettering are not exactly the same, but for those who want to draw something reasonably attractive in a certain place, like I do on the back of envelopes, they can be helpful). I do wish it came in a spiral bound version. It is a little difficult to manage the book. What worked for me was basically breaking the binding by opening it and putting it under a heavy box for a long time. But, it still doesn't work as well as a spiral binding would. These latter comments are not meant to detract from the book (or from any of her books) as it remains the case that I would choose hers over any other books I own. They are still the most useful to me if I want to create something straightforward NOW--and theories of adult learning tell us that this is what most adults want, most of the time. They most often want to do something now rather than engage in lots of practice to develop a skill for the hypothetical future. Her generous spirit comes across in the books (this one and the others) making it especially pleasant to use and learn from. I am very much hoping she will come out with a holiday book, either all the holidays of the year or especially for Christmas (so Amy and Amy's publisher, if you are reading this, I very much hope you will consider this). And thanks for an excellent book!

This is a great book is you need some suggestions on how to letter scriptures. As an artist I wanted something that would really give me help with the layout and this I believe will do that. If you are new to lettering there are lots of great suggestions in this book.

I love Latta’s hand lettering books. She has three out that I know of and none are the same but they all follow the same principles. Her books are not filled with lines of practicing letters or hand lettering exercises but rather spatial concepts, shapes and decorative elements to balance space. There are a multitude of lettering styles and she shows how to use them together as well as incorporating doodles and mini drawings. This one is faith based so it’s perfect for bible journaling, sermon notes or just spending time with the word.

This book is beautifully done. It is part art instruction and part devotional. Each "chapter" centers on a different Bible verse and presents a new hand lettering or illustrating technique as well as some thoughts and encouragement related to the verse. There is a space in each chapter to practice the techniques introduced, as well as a blank page with a border/illustration around the edges to do a "final version" of the verse yourself. (You can see my work from the first chapter in my photo - I added the lettering, but the flowers along the bottom were already there and I colored them in.) The pages are high quality - smooth and heavy weight. I love Amy's lettering style - it's very real, not so perfect that it seems impossible for me to achieve similar results, but still unique and beautiful. The techniques she introduces in each chapter are very transferrable to using in Bible journaling, sermon note taking, and general doodling/hand lettering. My only (VERY small) complaint is that the verses are mostly very familiar ones - I would have appreciated digging into some lesser-known verses. But the Word of God never returns void, so I am sure I will learn many things from my time spent illustrating and lettering these verses!

I love how much I have learned from this book so far! There are so many wonderful tutorials in this book! It’s great for Bible journaling and taking your lettering to the next level! I am so happy that I invested in this book! I will be referencing back to it for many years to come! A great book!

Got this for my wife for Christmas. She’s loving it and the lettering instructions throughout look easy enough for almost anyone to follow. Nice gift for that busy wife & mother in your life. She’s probably NOT going to try this lettering in her study Bible, but uses it when writing notes about apologetics and exegesis.

I wanted to learn to hand letter in my Bible so I grabbed this. Ladies and guys, this is one well put together handbook on lettering. Not complicated. Easy to follow steps. Wonderful quality paperback book. Great exercises and a little devotional for each entry. This artist/author loves the Lord and is very gifting at explaining things. Beginner friendly. Get this.

Lovely gift good Excercises

If you are a Christian and already a fan of Amy Latta, you will love this book. It is similar in style to Amy Latta's other book, 'Hand Lettering for Relaxation', but uses scripture verses for the text. By that, I mean she uses the same techniques to teach you how to turn text into art. It is an incredibly relaxing, yet absorbing artistic activity. I love that she had produced a book which so easily and enjoyably allows me to become absorbed in scripture. In addition to using the book to reproduce the scripture verses included, the book has also become another tool I now use when I'm bible journaling. It's a lovely, lovely, book.
