Schaums Outline of Thermodynamics for Engineers, 3rd Edition

Thermo is not a fun class at all. It's like a mixture of the worst parts of chemistry and physics combined. This booked helped me through it, mostly because it helps you develop a procedure to solve the problems. Get it and read through it whenever you get stuck in your main textbook, it really does help

Theory is all well and good but there is no substitute for the educational value of seeing problems solved, the reasoning behind the approach, etc. The Schaum series continue a long record of excellence.

Highly recommended for the Thermodynamics class required for engineers. Helped me get through the class. Presents the main topics with less wordiness than that of full textbooks. The problems in the book are in the basic level, though, so it should be used as a supplement to the main textbook.

Thermodynamics is a class that is basically a blend of physics and chemistry. Thermo basically, combines what you learn in the thermodynamics chapters in chemistry and the thermodynamics chapters in physics, makes the problems a bit different than those in either class, and then gives you an entire semester of that. This is one of the outlines that does teach you some of the theory but does not go into it as much as a textbook will, and then has a decent amount of worked-out examples and some problems in which you are just provided the answer. I did notice that the chapters were laid out a bit differently than they were in my particular textbook, and this definitely included material that we did not cover in class. But, I was always able to find what I was looking for and did not notice a bunch of mistakes (although I did not look at or try to work through every problem). So, overall, I think it is a good resource that can help you get through a thermodynamics class as painlessly as possible.

I was struggling some with Thermo and this Schaum's guide is one of the best ones I've gotten so far. It helped my grades instantly after using it for an entire weekend all weekend working problems and reading important information.

great book to supplement with textbook, has good example problems and does a pretty good job of explaining concepts in layman terms, the low cost makes it a great value and worth purchasing

I was failing this class at GA Tech after the first two exams, but managed a B after studying the rest of the summer with this companion book. Thermodynamics is crazy difficult, but this book made the material a lot more approachable and easier to handle.

If you are looking fo ra Schaum's series for Thermo I, get hte chemical applications version by Van Ness and Abbott. The Engineerings version uses second law for all the work throughout, which is normally taught in second semester.

Based on the initial glance of the problem sets it appears a good book that would provide a good learning and exam helper.

As a retired Chartered Engineer myself it was my experience during my education and training years that most engineers find trouble getting to grips with Thermodynamics. I did, too. The book has a range of worked examples which are a great help in improving this understanding. I bought the book for my grandson who is a second year mechanical engineering student at University. I also bought him the book 'Thermodynamics for Dummies' so that he may cross reference the 'hard' bits and better understand the theories/practice of Thermodynamics. Pay attention though to the 'sign convention' used in these books - in the back of both books there are index sections dealing with 'sign convention'.

Essential worked examples

The book should get credit for the many worked examples. Unfortunately, the wording of the problems is sometimes imprecise or assumes certain conditions (like atmospheric pressure or not). There are too many errors in the answers and in some of the appendices. Still worth the purchase though.

Good amount of questions and detail to support a thermodynamics module. Some parts were different to my module but that's expected from a generic book. Overall it probably saved my grade and I ended up getting a great first
