Review: Informative and Refreshingly Comical - I was a little nervous when I saw this was a 512 page book by a lawyer. Ugh. Nothing against lawyers, I just don't share their lingo. I anticipated a long haul and drudgery to get through it. NOT SO!!! This guy rocks. He doesn't bog it down superfluously or try to boast in eloquence/intelligence. He just calls it like it is and adds in a bunch of hilarity. I've been totally interested from page negative 5. I don't really know how many pages the preface stuff takes up, hence the negative 5. However, even those pages are filled with comedy. He has quite the writing style. Very reader friendly. A breeze and a joy to read. Thank you, Mr. Passman!

All You Need is Everything I needed to know the next idition
An important absolutely necessary book. A great and humorous read. This is the 4th edition of the book that I've purchased how ever it's the 1st that I've purchased from Amazon. It's a must read by a must read author. He's a high powered entertainment attorney, Donald Passman. Passman manages many high powered recording artist's careers, and these are big names that you would recognize. Donald knows from many years of practicing law in the music industry, just what he's talking about, and he writes in everyday common terminology, not legal terminology, which makes this book an entertaining and easy read. It reads like a conversation. It also contains just about everything anybody would need to know about the music business. I've gotten every new edition because the music business keeps changing and I want to keep up on every change. This particular book came to me in excellent condition. Cudos to the book store that sold it to me. And it came quicker than they said it would quicker than expected.

Used it as a college text book
I have taught Music Business classes in college several times and always used this as the text book. Students love the real world examples of how much money actually ends up in the hands of an artist after everyone else gets their cut. Brilliant stuff. Passman's style is almost too casual at times but the information is useful enough that I can overlook his folksy approach. The publisher and author have done a good job of keeping new editions in print that deal with emerging technology. I used to have a couple editions on the bookshelf but for the most recent switches to an ebook so it's always handy now even when I'm mobile.

Great Music Business Book from a Lawyers Perspective
This book offers a great perspective for a lawyers point of view. A very honest and candid explanation of virtually EVERY aspect of the music business. It's a very good book for those interested in hearing a bit of the nitty gritty that goes on in our wonderful but hectic world of music (behind the scenes). This book is not for ones that don't know the basics of the music business. Start reading this book after you have some experience with terminology and work in the biz in order to gain the most out of it. Something invaluable that this book offers is the tips and tricks in wording for going into negotiations as an artist and as the company. Take these tips and soak them in because they come from someone with YEARS of experience and most importantly SUCCESS!!!!

Very Good!
I really enjoyed this read! Very informative and educational. The music business can be a beast. So arm yourself with this most important weapon when taking on the industry. It covers pretty much everything I think a beginner in the business should know. From start to finish it is vital information. Whether it be management or artist development and general structure. It leaves nothing be questioned. I was just starting out when I bought this book and now I'm more than confident of what I need to do to get to the next level of my musical career. It's a must-have as far as I'm concerned. To be great at anything requires preparation and proper instruction of proven techniques from those who have done it successfully. This book is a great example of that! Now I know the biz! That's what's up!

Essential reading for anyone hoping to make a living out of music.
Donald Passman passes on the inside track on how the music business works. And sucks. Yep, even the unpalatable stuff is here. Essential reading for anyone hoping to make a living out of music. Dream on! It doesn't work like it used to. I gained some experience of the UK music industry during my time with WEA, CBS, Virgin, BMG and Universal from mid '70s through to the mid '90s. Passman certainly knows the industry inside out and helpfully shares it here. Fascinating reading and totally insightful. Great book. Not so great industry.
