would this pen holder work on my lap top computer?

It's a pretty strong magnet - works terrific on my fridge. I don't know if it is recommended to use magnets on a computer.

I would say yes. The magnet is pretty strong on them. They’ve yet to move from weight on my fridge.

Is the pocket "pre-formed"? I don't want to have to force the pen in or have to use two hands. I want to just drop it in, friction-free.

Yes, the pocket is pre-formed and the pen would not have to be "forced" into the holder. But whether or not you can "drop it in" will depend on the pen. The pen would need to be smooth plastic, no grip, like a Bic pen. My pens have a rubber-type grip around part of the pen. When I tried dropping, the grip stopped a smooth drop, I had to give a little push--with one hand, no need for two.
