What kind of scissors are they?

Metal. But if you mean what quality they are good for light/thin material at the most. I tried cutting standard fleece with them and while I was able to complete the job they did not perform the use as well as fabric sheers. They did, though, cut very nicely through cotton and linen very well. I use them as a handy pair of scissors on my belt while at SCA events.
