A win
A rich, creamy upgrade to the stock tubes that came with a pre-amp. Sweet sounds.

These tubes are very clear across the frequency spectrum
There is nothing to dislike about these tubes. I placed these tubes in the mains of my Mcintosh C2300 preamp. The Mac is feeding two Art Audio Sla-2 studio amps. I bridged the two amps to individually feed my speakers. The speakers Iโm using are old school JBL studio monitors 4343Bโs. The source Iโm using is the Cambridge Audio Azur 851N network player. Iโm an old school hip hop junky so I needed more bass than what was provided by the stock tubes in the Mac; the stock tubes are very clear and natural, but they are too thin. I tried to compensate for this short coming by adding an EQ to my system. I know you audiophiles hate eqโs, but I think Mcintosh realizes the positives of an EQ since they have recently dropped a $8k EQ in their line up. Now that I have added the Gold Lions Iโm having more fun taking out bass with the EQ since the Gold Lions have bass to spare. I also love classic jazz; one of the best albums to listen to to see how the mid and high range sounds is Miles Davisโ โKind of Blue.โ Miles loves the high register and if there is a weakness in your amps or speakers his trumpet will crack your tweeters and ears. Iโm hearing notes I never heard before on Coltraneโs sax. His sax just floats through the mid ranges with the the GL. Bottom line you get the bass with these, so have good bass management. On top of the bass you get is the open air clear quiet sounding highs and lows. If you are using tubes you canโt go wrong at this price point. If anyone knows of some 12ax7 at this price point that sound better, holla, Iโll give them a try. For now Iโm just floating away with the GLsโฆawesome sound. I have an even better preamp with these GL tubes. I will keep a couple of extras just in caseโฆ

Great performance in every way.
I used these to replace the stock Tungsol 12ax7s in my Jolida Fusion 3502P amplifier, and they are leaps and bounds better. They're dead silent, the have a deep and wide soundstage, they're smooth and full in all frequency ranges. I'm just getting into tube rolling though, and so far have only acquired a pair of Matsushita 12ax7s to compare them to. The Matsushitas have a more defined, deeper soundstage, but they're a bit harsh in the high frequencies and they produce a slight hiss when the music isn't playing. I have a pair of 1961 Sylvania long plates and a pair of Tunsgram 5751s on the way, but at the moment, the Gold Lions are the tube to beat.
