You won't want to put this book down.
I loved this book! The author manages to put you right in the store. You can hear the Christmas carols over the P.A. system and smell the roasted nuts. He is a gifted writer. My favorite part was pages 306-307. The section is called The Last Shopper. The author wonders if when the store closed on that last night....did the lights come on again..did the elevator start up ...was the store filled with shoppers and employees that had passed on? It was a beautiful thought. It reminded me of the last scene in Titanic where Rose passes on and she is led to the lobby of the ship near the staircase and everyone who had died before her was waiting for her and everything went on as it had been. My only complaint with this book is that the author never once mentioned Joan Glosser who was Alvin's wife. He mentioned the wives of all the other executives but not Joan. That saddened me. Joan Glosser was a very intelligent woman who I am sure suggested ideas over the years that were implemented at the Glosser stores . She was also a wonderful person. Go ahead and buy this book. You will thoroughly enjoy it.

Tells It Like It WAS !!
This book tells it like it WAS ! I grew up in Johnstown Pa. and this is exactly how I remember Glosser's. Back then we went downtown every Saturday on the bus.It was safe. We were only 12 or 13 years old and would shop all day from George's Song Shop, for the latest "record" to Woolworth's to Penn Traffic to Glosser's. You could meet your friends there for lunch. Usually lunch was a cherry Coke, a REAL cherry coke !! The pictures make it come back to life, like it was yesterday, Thanks for taking us back, to when life was simple. J E Vann

A must for everyone who loves Johnstown
Nostalgia all the way. Everyone who lives in or has ever lived anywhere that had a Glosser Bros., Gee Bee, Gee Bee Jr or Dollar Bargain will love this tale of immigrants who made it big and who, unlike huge companies of today (ahem) put the needs of their employees high on their list of priorities.Robert Jeschonek is a great author who took the time to get to know the former owners and employees and include many awesome photos. Well worth the price.

was greatly disappointed as it was basically a book about the family ...
I was so looking forward to reading this book....was greatly disappointed as it was basically a book about the family history and all the kids getting to eat all the candy they wanted when visited the store. I was hoping to get more wonderful stories about how it was to be a Glosser's customer. Was also disappointed in the quality of the pictures contained in the book. What I remember most about being in Glosser's is the snack bar beside the stairs in the center of the store. I loved the hamburgers they served and have never found anything close to them( and not a mention in the book...hmmm).
