Can you play music on Zone 2 independently without turning on the main (zone 1)?

I can play Zone 2 with Zone 1 on mute or with the volume all the way down but you can not turn Zone 1 off and still play zone 2

Can you choose to stream music from an iPhone/iPad via AirPlay ONLY in zone 2?

I don't know as I use the zone 2 channels for front presence speakers, you can stream direct from Spotify or Pandora or Sirius XM as well as airplay the apps are built in. You can have different sources for zone 1 and 2 I believe. I run Spotify from my iPad all the time it's really great, I have run the iTunes as well, my iPad becomes the remote for the receiver for music selection and volume. The receiver automatically finds my Windows PC on the same network to play iTunes.
