but I am very happy with the book and the training plan
I am writing this review a little early because I have not yet finished my 8th week of training, but I am very happy with the book and the training plan. I am a 53-yr-old woman who has not run for more than two decades, and I was worried about being able to keep up with the training plan: although I take ballet and yoga my cardio was not so strong and I was worried about stress injuries. However I have found the weekly schedules humane, do-able, and non-damaging to my older body. I am happily surprised by my progress and my ability to run longer every week! I mean actually **surprised** that I am able to run distances already. My progress is much better than I expected, and I owe that to the careful coaching in the book. Because I am such a newbie beginner I am sticking with the regular plan, but the book has a number of options for switching-up the training so I can continue to improve after my first 8-weeks of training. I have entered a 5K (my first "race" ever!) and am confident about finishing in a decent time thanks to coach Julia's book. BTW I do use a FitBit, MapMyRun, etc., yet I really appreciate having an actual printed book that I can hold and refer to. It keeps me encouraged to have it in my sight, next to my computer, reminding me to get up and run ;-). P.S. I have referred to my age in this review, but this book is pretty universal and has many training options for everyone - it is not exclusively for older people. Highly recommended.

Couch-to-5K Flunky Finds Success
As a frequent Couch-to-5K program flunky, I was a little leery of this book, however as a fan of Shauna Reid's blog Amazing Adventures of Diet girl, I figured Shauna wouldn't steer me wrong. I was right! My goal was to be able to run around a neighborhood lake and this program has successfully guided me to achieving this goal. This book gently encourages the reader to push themselves while still working within their own fitness level. Unlike couch-to-5K, you can still feel successful even if you need to take the occasional break while building your endurance. The chapters are empowering and the end result is magic! Thank you Julia and Shauna!

Highly recommended for all levels
This one of the best running/walk-running books I have seen. It's heart is a 5k program that is based on the authors' years of experience with people at all fitnesss levels, and it is extremely well thought out. At the same time, the book contains a wealth of information from strengthening foot exercises to advice on a first race. The layout and visuals make all this very accessible. Love it!

I did the online Up and Running plan a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it! Julie and Shauna are a terrific duo and know their stuff. They have included everything one would need to accomplish their beginner running goals...and beyond!

Transformational impact!
I had not exercised regularly in nearly 40 years, and wanted to lose some weight. This book was absolute magic and got me comfortably running 7km several times a week. Highly recommended!
