Sony STR-DN1050 7.2 Channel Hi-Res 4K AV Receiver (Built-in Wi-fi & Bluetooth)

I do not know what others are doing, or not doing, to grip so much about this receiver. It worked as advertised, the sound, Wi-fi, zone, and picture are superb. I did at first experience what appeared to be a HDMI handshake problem, only to realize that my top brand Panasonic TV has to be reset to work with this receiver. The way I had initially set up my TV was not compatible with the new bells and whistles found in the STR-DN1050. I find this to be an outstanding receiver for its price. as for the instructions, I really did not need them except for knowing where to go to do the out of the box network update to ensure the receiver worked right. the update took about 15 minutes using the an internet connection, Wi-Fi was later an very easy setup. the rest i learned by surfing around the GUI on the TV for about 20 minutes, setting up the bells and whistles as i did. the sound balancing system was right on the first time I used it, It took no time. Setup was simple. the back is laid out clearly. Note: i have always had a receiver since 1968 so I am use to change and this one has a lot of them. Great receiver, The only ones who should be disappointed are the ones who are expecting to be disappointed in the first place. This is an update to my own post, please read. I have called SONY several times on whether the 1050 is HDCP 2.2 capable with a firmware upgrade. I was told a couple of times in a beat around the bush way that it was. NOTE the Sony web does not mention ultra HD or HDCP 2.2 at anytime for this model. Finally today I got the answer from SONY that this model's chipset does not support HDCP 2.2. This to me is a deal breaker, I have sent it back. HDMI 2.0 without HDCP 2.2, a standard advocated by SONY, could influence future playing of upcoming Ultra HD media I have traded this in for the Onkyo TX-NR636 which has HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2. What was SONY thinking on this? Drop my stars by 2 for SONY's avoiding clearifying its 4k specs and capabilities. It has taken me two orders and 20 days to get this straight, not great service. I do thank the last SONY rep for giving me the answer I needed to make the right choice. This is still a great receiver if you are not looking for HDCP 2.2

I'm a big Sony fan and was excited to replace my decade old Sony receiver with something up to date with multi-zone features. The 1050 was very easy to setup in a 5.1 mode with outdoor zone 2 speakers. Very slick graphical interface and plenty of features with TERRIFIC sound. Zone 2 features worked flawlessly and I could stream my music through Bluetooth or Airplay on zone2 while watching TV or playing the same music on the main system with complete independent volume control....just what I wanted. Within a few days, the system locked up and after 30 minutes of playing around with switching modes, sources and unplugging , I was able to get it back to normal. A week later, it locked up (no graphical interface this time) and absolutely no sound to any zone from any source and no error messages on the front panel. Even after resetting to factory settings using the "clearing" and "cleared" method in the manual, the system was unresponsive. Either terrible quality control or the same hdmi issues mentioned in a bunch of the 1 star reviews. I'm lucky it died within the 30 day easy return Amazon window. Will be getting a full refund and looking for another brand with similar features but better reliability.

I have never taken so long to write a review - a full 5 months. It was necessary to live with this receiver in a real-life everyday living environment, listening to a wide variety of what I would normally listen to for me to offer a review that is useful to others. I have rarely swung so wide between giving any product a 1-star or a 5-star. I have never been so torn while reading reviews from people who either love this receiver or think it is junk. I work hard at writing detailed and very honest reviews and I was not about to be coerced into throwing a rating number at this product until I really had time to live with it and learn its pros and cons. What you are about to read is real life ... I have a long background in consumer electronics and have personally owned some of the top-rated products in hi-fi history. I don't take the quality of sound I hear out of an electronic device lightly. Note that there is a video attached to this review to give an overview of the unpacking experience and a close-up of the controls and ports. It is not intended to review the performance of the receiver. INITIAL EXPERIENCE I don't know how much the look and feel of a media component means but as far back as earliest days of radio and phonographs design has been a crucial part of sound equipment marketing. Note that when it comes to multi-channel media receivers there is hardly a tiny variance from the accepted "look" of a black box with a brushed aluminum (or aluminum-look) faceplate. There must be the expected large black knob(s). The LCD display is located in exactly the same location on almost every brand. The size and shape are virtually identical from brand-to-brand. In the retail shelf-space you won't find silver-faced units anymore. No wood grain. No white. No red. No green. All of those would be the kiss of death on retail shelves. So the Sony meets expectations here. Not that what it looks like has anything to do with how it sounds or functions. It simply looks like most other receivers. QUALITY OF DESIGN & USABILITY The front panel is scarce. A personal disappointment is that the faceplate is made of plastic and shows fingerprints a lot. Even cheaper units from the competition use extruded aluminum. The user is barely aware that there are buttons along the entire width of the LCD display. Most people will never use them. There are two large heavy round knobs that have that smooth feel that Yamaha introduced many years ago, and they feel great. One is to control sound volume, which some people may use occasionally. The other is the input selector, which is rendered redundant and obsolete by Sony's simple and easy to use remote control. There are also a couple of front panel inputs that most people will rarely use but it's nice having them there. The rear panel is very pared down compared to most 7.1 receivers. On the negative side the speaker terminals are so tightly crammed together it is virtually impossible to connect bare-end speaker wires. Do yourself a favor and opt for banana plugs. There are plenty of HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs but from there this receiver falls downhill when it comes to analog and optical inputs and outputs. And the assignability of the few that exist is tightly regulated by the manufacturer. Sony obviously lives in a HDMI-only world. One simple thing I miss is the old-school switchable AC accessory power plug on the back. So cheap to have included and easy to give us ... and so missed. FUNCTIONALITY Compared to its competition and earlier generation Sony products the on-screen-display (OSD) is brilliant and deserves tremendous praise. It is always ready to go at a button's press to display on your TV and is clean, simple, easy to read and for the most part, covers almost any setup function you wish to perform. It almost totally makes up for a remote control that has the most minimalistic buttons since your grandfather's Zenith TV. There are a few things that required reading the manual but not many, from everything I've seen Sony's OSD is best in class. The remote itself is pretty good. Being that the buttons are assignable I wish Sony had found a way of letting the user custom label them instead of printing arbitrary and sometimes confusing designation on the button caps. There's not much to this remote ... a few assignable buttons, a basic transport control and a very basic volume/mute control. That's it. And after a while using it, I don't miss the 83 buttons of my previous receiver's remote. Having already said that the buttons on the remote are assignable, with so few of them I would have liked to be able to assign some functions that are not possible, like direct access to favorite sound fields. And using internet radio is a multi-step process that requires the on-screen TV display each time ... there is no way to simply press one button on the remote and resume listening to a favorite internet radio channel. But to be fair, most competitive receivers are also not ready for prime time when it comes to understanding how to implement internet radio. HOW DOES IT SOUND? This is why I got it. My old receiver had close to most of the features I need other than network radio and wifi connectivity. I've never thought of Sony as being in the same league and some of the long-respected godfathers of audio and my past experiences with similar Sony products has been not that great. My old receiver (an expensive, top of line, Onkyo 7.1 receiver) never sounded "great" from the first day out of the box. Coupled with my Mirage 7.1 speakers and 2 ultra-bass JBL subwoofers my old receiver just sounded weak and puny. Every frequency sounded forced and everyday TV just sounded, okay being honest, like a TV with a 3" speaker. I can't test every brand and model out there but I will say this. After 3-4 calibration resets I got the sound out of my new Sony receiver to be gut-wrenching, drawer-dropping knock-your-socks off amazing. And that's on every source up to the highest definition audio I could toss at it. As much as Sony leaves me wanting when it comes to operation and functionality I will say this to you ... it makes sound come alive! Now a purist should expect the sound from an amplifier to be uncolored. Not only isn't that a reality with most modern sound equipment, our tastes have changed over the years and have been influenced by what we hear in theaters and concerts. We want our sound to please us, not give us 100% faithful reproduction. And I assure you that the Sony delivers pleasing sound. SUMMARY This is a powerful receiver, well suited for use with a good matched set of speakers. I realize that the volume "numbers" are relative and vary from brand to brand but just to give you an idea, my usual listening position with the Sony is between 20-30, whereas with the Onkyo it was between 50-60. At that high of a volume setting it was inevitable to hear hum and other electronic noise. With the Sony you can hold the speakers to your ears like headphones (with no music playing obviously) and hear zero electronically-induced noise. NEGATIVES: Are there negatives? Yes and they can be frustrating. Sony's idea of a user manual is for you to go to a website, where it is available in interactive form. Even at that, for an item like a sophisticated receiver, the manual is sketchy and does not explain in-depth what some features and functions do. Another negative is that a few times it has simply forgotten what it is doing and locked up. Not shut down (like from overheating) but locked up all of the control and stopped producing sound. Unplugging it for a few hours has reset it (so far) but then it is a pain to go through the entire setup and sound balancing process again. In 5 months that has happened 3 times. And I'll reiterate that the quantity and versatility of analog and digital inputs and outputs (other than plenty of HDMI connections) is less than expected for the price. BOTTOM LINE: If I rated this receiver solely on sound quality and nothing else (and after all that is its primary job) I would give it 5-stars. If I rated it on everyday ease of use it would also get 5-stars. But if I rated it on versatility and dependability, based on my experience, it would be hard to give it much more than 1-star - it doesn't outshine any other brand that I've seen or used. But I am happy with it and combined with my Mirage speakers the sound is awesome, so a fair final rating all things considered is 4-stars.

Let me first say I am by no means an audiophile. I bought this to replace an aging Onkyo 5.1 "theater in a box" setup. A lot has changed since I purchased my first setup nearly 10 years ago. I have to say, this is a great receiver for the price. I picked mine up as a warehouse deal in very good condition. In fact, it was brand new and doesn't look like it was ever removed from the box. Setup is a breeze using the included microphone. I paired this with a Polk TL2/MC60 speaker package I put together and a PSW 505 Polk sub. My only issue was a matter of user error. As this is a 7.2 system, it has 2 LFE subwoofer outputs. I arbitrarily chose one and could not get my sub to calibrate or put out any bass. I swapped to the other output and problem solved. The TL2's are satellite speakers and the calibration setup correctly identified all perimeters. I tweaked it a little but all in all, pretty accurate. The HDMI passthrough is a great feature but takes some getting used to compared to when you want to switch the input with the reciever off. Choosing and input with the receiver on automatically turns it back on. Not a huge issue but a bit annoying. I am using the full 7.1 setup and elected to power a second zone with a separate amp using the zone to preamp output. Otherwise you lose 2 channels from the 7.1/7.2 setup (specifically your rear surrounds) and end up with a 5.2 setup. There is no quick way to access the zone 2 features via the GUI. I downloaded the android app and it makes it much easier. Being able to listen to separate inputs in each zone is nice. I am also using the multiple HDMI outputs as we have a second TV in the kitchen. You can either use the HDMI zone 2 or the HDMI B output in conjunction with your main HDMI A out. HDMI B plays the same as HDMI B while HDMI Zone 2 can function independently. Sound is great from this machine compared to my old setup. Granted the speakers have a role here but the brains of the system is the DN1050. We mainly use thi for it's surround sound role with music being secondary. Either way, the average user will be impressed for the price. I don't have a 4k TV yet so I can't comment on that. It's in the works so I'll know more in the future. Bottom line, if you are on the fence this is a great deal for the money. You won't find a better deal at this price point. While the DN1060 is the newest model of the series I don't feel it justifies nearly $100 more for whats been updated.

Despite the bad reviews explaining the HDMI issues, I went ahead and purchased based on the majority of the good reviews. My first purchase was a dud. It had the HDMI issue. However, that was not purchased from Amazon which was a mistake and a whole other discussion. Moving on, the unit I recieved from Amazon works absolutley perfect...or did until I tried to use the wireless. It won't connect no matter what I do. I have tried absolutley everything. There wasn't much on the web about the 1050 having wireless issues but the 1040 has a bunch and I followed those posts in hopes of finding the problem. So far no go. The ethernet works just fine though which is one reason I have not returned this. The other reason for not returning is that I already had one unit with HDMI problems. I will gladly deal with wireless issues that can be overcome by hard wiring it versus the HDMI issues that have no work around. Aside from the above problems, this unit works great and is very easy to use. The sound quality is subjective since it relies heavily on the speakers you have. I have a hard time recommending this unit to anyone mostly because it seems to have many of the potential issues that plaqued the 1040 and the 1030. You may or may not get a bad unit but it sems to be a common issue, far more common then it should be.

I haven't take the time yet to review a product when I am only so-so enthused over it (a 2-3-4 star review). Hence, my reviews are 5 stars. My 5 star reviews are balanced against the intended purpose and price point of the product. At this price point, I have yet to hear a better receiver. Sony is on their audio game these days, especially for a mainstream brand. The setup is easy, the Spotify Connect is a breeze, and using your iPhone to control it is easy. I never looked at one piece of instructions, paper or online. I am currently only powering two front (L/R) tall Polk Rti A7s, no sub, no satellites, no zones. They've never sounded better. My main purpose of this one was audio - an old school stereo, with a modern twist. I stream high res audio files through AirPlay on a MacBook Pro, AirPlay max quality Spotify from iPads and iPhones (at which point I let the receiver take command with Spotify Connect), and play CDs on a Sony PlayStation. You'll know when the receiver takes over the downloading on Spotify Connect. Saves your iPhone battery and cuts out the middle man. Even bluetooth sounds good enough for a quick fix of high wattage. Also, the onscreen menus are easy to use. I'll add some speakers and test blu-ray soon...it will also "dumb down" 5.1 and 7.1/7.2 audio to 2-channel stereo, trying to keep some integrity. I am actually really interested to how that sounds on a blu ray to account for center channel dialogue. I will report back. WARNING on the sticker on the front panel. I got one on a very cold day...it left a lot of residue, which I think was due to the cold. I should have heated it with a blow dryer or waited for the product to come to room temperature, but I was too excited to set it up. The usual suspects did NOT remove the residue. Eventually, I got down to my Griot's Speed Shine and Griot's Bug and Tar remover (also 5 star products)...and it came off like it wasn't there. I quickly followed up with an electronics cleaner to remove any remaining car products. Good as new.

This receiver produces an amazing sound, it is hard to believe what I paid for it. Not only am I happy with my purchase, I am extremely happy with the time it took to be delivered. I purchased my receiver on Saturday and had it at my front door the very next day (Sunday) with Prime. But the real thanks for this quick service is for selling company. I highly recommand this receiver. 1/4/2015 Changed my rating from a five star to a two star for the product and the lack of customer service I have received from Sony. I now have this product less then a month and I am having a problem. For the last couple of days when I try to view a movie from my 3D Blu-Ray player, I get a "protection" display on the receiver, then it shuts off. I am so disappointed after loving the sound and features of this product. Less then a month and already having problems. The receiver this replaced was a Kenwood which finally gave out after 26 years. I was hoping Amazon would simply replace my defective product, but they would only refund my account.

Sony STR-DN1050 7.2 Channel Hi-Res 4K AV Receiver (Built-in Wi-fi & Bluetooth) This device started off great, or mostly great. There were some issues with the user interface that frustrated me and the Bluetooth feature was a bit clunky, but overall the device was solid at firmware s9602.1316.0. It took a while to start up and did not play nice with my Panasonic TV, but it worked. Switching between devices was slow and there were a lot of loud clicks and delays. The device also runs rather hot, even when it is "idle" since it is a network receiver. I upgraded to the most recent firmware s9602.1322.0 with little or no improvement in the clunky user interface. After a few days the UI slowly started to degrade, showing Chinese or Japanese characters on some menu items and displaying fuzzy graphics. After about a month the user interface on the TV became unusable, and even the on-screen volume indicator stopped working. I had tried multiple factory resets and basic debugging (unplugged for 60 seconds etc...) but to no avail. I called Sony and they stated that my warranty had expired at 730 days and I had waited until day number 745 to call... my fault there since I know there were issues at day 710. The front-facing LED screen still works and the device is still functional. Unfortunately much of the configuration is done using the on-screen user interface so I'm unable to rename devices or customize my menus any longer now that I've performed another factory reset after the UI had failed. But at least volume, input, and some other settings are still configurable using the front-facing buttons or the remote control. For now. Sony quality used to be top notch but this POS indicates that the once-great electronics giant has stopped caring. This fall in quality seemed to coincide with their decision to begin making components in China like everyone else rather than in Japan. This is disappointing. I would have upgraded to a DN1060 or DN1070 if this had not happened. As is, I will NOT by buying Sony again for some time and my replacement to this junk will be an Onkyo or perhaps even a Pioneer.

Best receiver I have owned. Great bang for the buck. Easy setup and great sound for our main audio system.

very good sound, but there's a lot of heat going out of this (rather big) unit. The HDMI ports became loose a bit and now it's "crashing" once in a while (speakers will stop working, have to power-cycle). Also, with a good turntable, there was always a hum so I had to find another TT to use on this (and get another amp for the other). But for movies and TV, very good. Honestly though, today I (still) use this unit on a 2.0 systems with good bookshelves and it never was that good.

私はオーディオに詳しくないので、カタログを読んでもよく分かりませんが、本機はHDMI出力を2系統装備していることと（プロジェクター接続に必要）、以前購入したSONYのヘッドフォンが悪くなかったので、あまり迷わずコレに決めました。 購入前までは、15年もののアナログミニコンポから映画音声を出力していましたが、買い換えて大正解。 今までのミニコンポでは再生されていなかった音があることに気づき、何度も観た映画をまた観直しています。 映画の感動の半分くらいは音響が担っているとの持論に至りました。 スピーカーの自動セットアップ後、予め用意された数種類の音響エフェクトから好みを選べば問題はありません。 ソース音源をそのまま再生することもできますが、私はグラマーな音が好きなので、エフェクトを色々試して楽しんでいます。 スピーカーは同じSONYのSS-CSシリーズで統一しました。 サラウンド用、リア用にSS-CS5を2組（4本）充てましたが、あまり音量は出ていない感じです。（残響音担当？） システム全体としての音量バランスは適切なのかも知れませんが、それならばもっと安価なスピーカーでも足りたような気がします。 逆にセンタースピーカーはよく鳴っているので、「予算をかけるならセンタースピーカーが第１順位」と今勝手に思っています。 とはいっても、これらスピーカーとアンプで14万円未満の価格なのでコストパフォマンスとしても満足しています。 満点評価でないのは、試していない機能がたくさん残っているからです。
