Honestly, i'd be a bit wary of hanging a backpack with that much weight. The hinge part could break off. I mean, it is plastic. If anything, for your case, i would suggest something that didnt fold.

Would this support a 5-7 pound motorcycle helmet?

5-7 pounds should be totally fine. I was curious about my backpack and gently hung it on the hook; backpack is around 20lbs I’d guess. Hook definitely felt like it couldn’t do it for long - but it held for a moment before I decided to just use it for my headphones haha. It’s been awhile since I rode but I think it would do fine with a bike helmet.
