Brinsea Ecoglow Safety 600 Chick or Duckling Brooder, Up to 20 Chicks

I have raised lots of chicks in a tub with a heat lamp. I always had worries about temperature and keeping them too hot or too cold. Risk of fire is always a concern, and of course, the electric bills are pretty crazy while you've got the lamp on 24/7. Heat lamps are also unpleasant for chicks. They get bright light 24 hours a day, and they are always exposed. The norm is a loud bunch of chicks doing a lot of stress chirping. This radiant heat source was everything I hoped it would be. I don't worry about fires. I don't worry about keeping the right temperature for the chicks. I don't worry about baking them alive. The chicks like it too. They get to huddle under this heater and feel safe. They are much quieter as a result, because they are content and not constantly stressed out. I really should have bought this long ago. I purchased this heater (bigger than I needed) and started it at 3 inches high at the front end and a bit lower on the back end so that that chicks could pick the amount of contact they wanted. As they grow, it is easy to adjust. A protective plastic cover is easy to clean, since they love to sit on top of it. I have this heater set up in a fully screened pop-up playpen meant for small puppies, and the chicks just couldn't be happier. I did have to teach them how to use it. I know on the videos I have seen the chicks run right under it when they are introduced, but I didn't have this exact experience. My chicks did run in and out underneath it but didn't seem to get it. I had to listen for the stress chirping, and go shove them under there. After a few hours, everyone had gotten the hang of it. Honestly the easiest experience with raising chicks I have ever had.

The panel was easy to set up and use. The little chicks loved running in and out of it as well as taking cozy naps. The only drawback is that you have to adjust the temperature under the panel by raising the panel on the legs. This takes the use of a thermometer to figure out whether you have it at the right height once you start trying to establish or decrease the temperature to get the chicks used to cooler temps. You also have to factor in the room temperature as well as it seems to also affect the temperature under the panel. Since this was my first time with the Brinsea brooder, it was a learning experience. A really good thing about it is that in the case of power burps/outages, it automatically starts back up without having to go in and reset a bunch of digital things. We had a storm that caused numerous power burps, but the unit rebooted itself each time and kept the chicks warm. I would recommend this brooder, especially to folks new to the hatching and brooding of chicks. Update: I bought a second unit a few months later. Just as happy with that one as the first one. I like not having to worry about something getting too hot on the chicks. Just remember to adjust the height of the legs to adjust the temperature of what the chicks are experiencing as they get older--the panel heat doesn't adjust. If you see chicks staying outside the unit to sleep, it's time to adjust the panel to be a little higher. You will also need to adjust as they get taller. Always check the temperature they are experiencing with a good thermometer.

I tested this a few days before our chicks arrived to make sure everything is working properly. In this photo the heater was very short, and the thermometer was underneath. At first I couldn’t get it past 86 degrees but the thermometers sensor is on the back, so I flipped it so it was facing the heat plate and the temp was perfect. So if you have an issue where the temp is too low, maybe try that. I love the adjustable legs. My previous producers pride only had 3 height settings so this is huge for me! And the plastic cover will be a game changer for cleaning I’m sure. It is also not too hot to the touch so I’m not worried about my chicks being burned. It is a great size but definitely will not fit 30+ older chicks, I’d say more like 15. So far this is great and worth the price, I will update my rating if anything changes

This is the most amazing piece of chic equipment I have seen over the last 50 years. It's inexpensive and friggin works! Now, a few suggestions. Make sure it is in a box of some sort that drafts can be controlled , it not going to work outside or in an unheated building, so stop whining. We are off grid, the kitchen has it own system with a 300 ah liphos battery . Runs all night, needle never moves.

Six years later, I'm expecting a shipment of 12 chicks later this summer, so I'm gathering my supplies and equipment. I re-read my review posted in 2020 and noticed the irony of the MFR's claim: "For up to 20 newborn chicks OR 12 larger ones...." The last time I used the Brooder Plate it worked well in helping me raise my 12 surviving chicks (two had died) to turnout size. I'm confident it will do the same for the 12 chicks I'm expecting this year, so I'm upping my stars from 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ to 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I cannot give it a full 5⭐️ review for the reasons given in my initial review. And I can't help but wonder about the poor souls who start with 20 chicks (!!!👀) only to discover a few weeks later that the MFR was serious in their statement that the Brooder can only handle 12 larger chicks.... (Here begins my Original Review from 2020): I've raised chicks before but don't expect to do so again soon, so this seemed a good option considering cost and size. It turned out to work pretty well for my needs, BUT it may not for all folks because of some limitations that may not be obvious to the casual shopper/beginning user, hence this review: Overall Impressions: Works well for what it can do, but isn't necessarily labeled properly. ~It's sold as the Ecoglow 20 and the MFR states it will handle 20 chicks, BUT, in their description, they do state that there are limitations to what a radiant brooder can handle and suggest things like "place near a wall" and "use above 50 deg. F" etc, etc. This is CYA-speak for "we're stretching the limits of what this brooder is designed for - Caveat Emptor (Let The Buyer Beware!)" Fortunately for me, I had purchased this for the 14 chicks I was expecting, and when they arrived on Day 3 of their little lives, they all fit underneath, but, without much room to spare. It was cool enough in our very cool late Spring that I needed to set the brooder height VERY low. In a warmer clime, 20 chicks MIGHT fit - early on, anyway - but I highly doubt a beginner would be able to nurse all 20 to turnout size with just this heat source if the conditions varied much at all. Even though heat requirements diminish as chicks grow, the knowledge of when to raise a radiant plate and how to observe proper height management is a tricky skill gained only by experience. I lost a chick (probably because it jumped from the shipping box while I transferred the chicks to their new home, and had an unseen internal injury -it happens). But he did get a bit hypothermic while I got the heat of my enclosure dialed in. A pullet died a day later for unknown reasons - this happens, too - but if I hadn't added supplemental heat for the first several days, I have no doubt losses could have been higher. A beginner would likely expect their purchase to provide for twenty chicks through whatever conditions, and if that didn’t happen, possibly end up demoralized and maybe give up. Never knowing they had depended too much on inadequate equipment. This is a satisfactory product, and I've been a bit nit picky. But IMO, it's NOT going to handle 20 chicks for the full time one would purchase a brooder. If it were labeled for 12 birds, I believe it would be more accurate, and I'd give it 5 Stars....

My chicks love this heat plate. I love that it’s safer than heat lamps, easily adjustable, you can set it at a slant so the chicks can choose their desired level of heat, and the plastic removable cover makes cleaning super easy. Would recommend!

The size is great. My 5 ducklings fit nice under it with plenty of room. We will see how well it works after they are 3 weeks old since they grow so fast. But seems like it will be just fine for them. There is no noise from the plate. It definitely works well and the clear cover it comes with is a lifesaver when it comes to cleaning. Putting it together was super easy. I pushed the legs in at first to get it through that new plastic feel. But twisting is super easy. Adjusting the legs while in the brooder is simple. Thinking of purchasing the larger one since I plan on adding to my flock again next year.

I bought two of these on May 14, '24 for my 17 chicks that arrived on May 23. I set both heat plates up in the brooder. One set a little higher for the larger chicks, one a little lower for the smaller chicks. Both heat plates were working great. They heated up quickly and maintained a safe, but warm temperature. The chicks separated into two groups under the heat plates. In the middle of day two, the chicks under one of the plates began complaining. Upon investigating the source of their discomfort, I found that one of the heat plates was not working. I traced the cord and plug to be sure that it was well seated in the socket, which it was. I unplugged the non-working heat plate and found a different socket. The heat plate did not work in the new socket. It has been placed in the storage shed for repackaging and returning to Amazon. Thankfully, I had an older heat plate, not a Brinsea, that had been in storage for almost five years. Thankfully, it began heating the second I plugged it into the same original socket that the now non-working Brinsea had occupied. We are now on day seven, and both the Brinsea and the other model are still producing heat. Now, for the pros on the Brinsea. It comes with a clear protective, flat cover for the top to protect it from chick messes. My different model has a triangular-shaped cover, making it impossible for chicks to stand on. The Brinsea comes with a nice long cord, making it easy to reach sockets that may be further away from the brooder's placement. The heat from the Brinsea is consistent without hot or cold spots. The legs are adjustable to easily accommodate different-sized chicks. One side can be higher than the other, so smaller and larger chicks can share the Brinsea. Note to size. My 17 chicks, including a Jersey Giant and an assortment of Wyandottes, Cochins, and Bielefelders, barely fit under the heat plate. Beware of claims of accommodating a higher number of chicks unless you are raising banty hens.

Cuando me llego el eco glow me pareció un poco caro y el plástico pensé que no iba a ser muy util. Pero ahora lo amo y mis pollitos tambien. Ya voy por la cuarta parvada y hasta ahora todo es miel sobre hojuelas. Las ventajas 1. Es facil de graduar la altura e incluso de puede poner a alturas diferentes para hacer al pollito mas cómodo. 2. No emite luz nocturna. 3. Es muy seguro para los pollos no hay superficies que quemen horrible ni circuitos expuestos. 4. No calienta el ambiente el pollito puede acomodarse solo en donde el quiera y alejarse del calor (importante si tienes dias muy calidos al medio dia) 5. El plastico protector transparente hace que la limpieza sea muy facil. Desventajas 1. No es para exterior Una cosa importante que tener en cuenta es; que al tocar la parte de abajo esta realmente caliente.

Feels hot to the touch and i was worried about our ducklings getting burned. But i watched them closely and it hasn't been an issue. They love it. I set the back at lower height than the front. Easily fits my 4 indian runners from hatch to 3 wks old. They are 3 wks old today and now only 3 fit under it. I'm ordering a larger size to get them to 6 weeks old.
