My favorite flat iron EVER!
*** Just a quick update.... I've had this flat iron for several months now and I still LOVE it. It has held up well to daily use. What I wanted to add was that I accidentally figured out how to make the plates span wider, which was a common concern among other users. There's a tab toward the back of the flat iron nearest the cord. If you press and push it, it will allow the flat iron to open up. This discovery has made styling so much easier and has made me love this product even more than before. ------------------------------------ Thanks to my thick and frizz-prone hair, I've gone through my fair share of flat irons. After being extremely disappointed with past flat iron purchases, I realized my stylist was right - cheap flat irons won't do the job. Because of her advice (and all the money I wasted while trying to be frugal and buy inexpensive flat irons), I finally gave in several years ago and invested in a quality flat iron. That thing was my best friend and when it died after almost 6 years of heavy use, I was sad. Even worse, that brand wasn't being made anymore. So, of course, I jumped on to see what Amazon might have to offer. I was initially reluctant to consider this one because the price tag wasn't near that of my dearly departed flat iron, but after reading some positive reviews, I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did! As others have mentioned, the packaging is wonderful. It truly makes you feel like you are buying a luxury product and I love that it comes with a heat resistant travel pouch. I had read that other people were having some frustration with the placement of the buttons but I followed the instructions that came with the unit (quickly push the "power" button twice) and had no problem locking the controls so that I wouldn't accidentally power it off, up, etc. while using it. The variety of heat settings allowed me room to "play" and see what would work best for me without scorching my hair. I've found I'm best at around 395 degrees but this baby will heat up even more for those who might require higher temperatures. The plates are a bit close together, making getting your hair between them a bit challenging, but now that I've been using it for a week, I'm getting used to it and it's no longer an issue. The cord is SUPER long and seems to do a good job at not tangling. Most importantly, it did a fabulous job on my hair with just one pass on each section! With a little practice, it's no trouble getting a loose curl at the ends, too. What's more, my hair doesn't look (or smell) fried like it has with other flat irons. Instead, it looks really healthy and natural and the style holds for days. I'm so glad I wasn't deceived by the price of this product, as it truly does deliver value well above it's cost. I would definitely recommend this flat iron to anyone who has some unruly hair to tame!

Soft & Silky hair with lots of shine
Short version: it is so awesome that I am considering giving it an engagement ring. An actual review that has information that is usually asked in the questions section: I actually had purchased the xtava Pro-Satin Black 1" flat iron on Prime Day and liked it a lot ...except that it didn't entirely make my hair understand what a flat iron actually does. I also had to use maximum heat because my hair is kind of a jerk:.stick straight (always) with the exception of one rebel wavy bump. My hair is very healthy because I am 99% wash and go (because my stylist will not show up at 5am every morning and make it look as incredible as it does when I leave the salon). I'm either too inpatient, in a hurry, or unmotivated to do anything significant in styling so as not to anger the bump and cause it to recruit more sections. Why is this important to know? Because I finally have dominated the rebel bump and my stylist won't be sad anymore with what I have done to his masterpiece - and with minimal effort!!! Clearly, I'm not a *spend hours on my hair* type of girl; I like to live dangerously and rush the process by taking giant sections and speeding through it as if I was worried the iron will explode at any minute. In addition, I have baby fine wisps that are around the natural part in my hairline and my overall hair is fine -- but I have a lot of it, so that makes styling more complicated...because my hair hates me. The big test was to see if my effort resulted in looking like I put lots of effort into grooming. On any other day, my hair looks great for about an hour or so and then it reverts to its natural state, either out of spite or the evil humidity donkey kicks the crap out of it. Xtava was having none of that and my hair looked on point 12+ hours later -- even when I woke up the next morning. The packaging is gorgeous (I can't bring myself to throw away the black box) and protects the iron wwel; I am a super fan of the storage bag (High five for creating a protective and shiny inside lining). The digital readout is another big plus because it blinks at me after I choose a temperature (pretty sure it is code for GIVE ME A MINUTE AND I'M ALL YOURS since it stays solid when the setting is reached). Plus, then I actually remember what heat setting I should use instead of chancing it (on my old iron) like I was spinning for the Price is Right Showcase Showdown. I think my only *kind of a bummer* was that it took me a bit to figure out the locking mechanism-- it seemed like it would only open about an inch and I couldn't shove half of my hair in it. Then I realized to move the switch back and then the magic happened. It would have been nice if the directions stated that feature a little clearer since some of us hair novices are unable to figure out obvious things without a giant sign. I am honestly amazed a styling tool less than $40 could be so awesome!

Excellent and versatile product!
I have used this flat iron a half dozen times since receiving it. I was so pleasantly surprised that, as others have said, it noticeably speeds up the time it takes to do my hair. I have very curly hair, and the larger plate bed and the infrared technology works well with my hair. I am appreciative of the variable temperatures, although for my hair, I'm setting it in the higher range. I have recently had the occasion to have my hair blown dry and flat ironed at the salon, (after highlighting) and I was really shocked to notice that I preferred the results I got at home, with this flat iron. My hair looked better, was straighter, AND had more shine. I can also get sexy curls at the bottom of my shoulder length hair by twisting/holding it at the end, much like a curling iron. The curls at the bottom are soft, natural and so easy to do. As a lefty, I DO have the problem of turning off the flat iron inadvertently during use- because of the location of the switch and how I am holding it. That is a small inconvenience in an otherwise great product that has vastly improved my hair routine. The unit heats up in about 90 seconds. I find this to be an excellent product at a reasonable price.

Awesome product!
I am very impressed with this flat iron. I was in the market for an infrared flatiron made by Amika, however did not believe in spending $140 for one. After much product research I went ahead and purchased the xtava infrared flatiron. All I can say is “wow!” I have naturally coarse hair that has been bleached making it even more compromised. You must blow dry your hair with a ceramic barrel brush prior to using. Now, once your hair is dry, this iron takes two passes per strand. The extra wide plates make for a quick job. I am amazed at how silky, straight and static free my hair is. I honestly can’t tell the difference between what Amika did vs. xtava. This is a great buy for the money!

This is the solution I had been looking for
I have thick, wavy, curly, mostly uncontrollable hair that's past my shoulders. When I go to a salon for a cut, they always manage to get my hair to look shiny and poker straight, a feat I was never able to achieve left to my own devices. Over the years I tried an assortment of different types of flat irons ranging from cheap to crazy expensive models, made from all different materials and widths in my search my that elusive styling tool which would make my hair manageable and looking good. The series of flat irons I purchased did an okay job of straightening my hair but none of them left it looking truly flat & silky. Instead, my hair resembled a pyramid; it was certainly straight but angled out about 45° from my scalp which wasn't quite the effect I was going for. Recently, I read an article which outlined the type of flat iron each hair type should be using for optimal results. According to what I read, hair like mine needed a much wider paddle, 1-1/4 " at least and the preferred material should be tourmaline. I figured adding one more flat iron to the collection couldn't hurt so I scurried to Amazon to check out their selection and I found this one. I've used it three times already and it's made a world of difference. The wider paddles allow me to get the job done faster and between those & the tourmaline material, my hair isn't sticking to the plates but it is coming out much flatter and shiny. It's pretty close to the results my stylist gets which is something I didn't think would be achievable doing it myself. I love that this model has a wide temperature range and my favorite feature is an automatic shut off for those panicky moments when you're on your way to work and suddenly wonder if you unplugged the flat iron. All in all, I'm thrilled with this purchase and recommend it to anyone with a similar hair type.

It's ok.
After 3 and a half years of weekly use, my cheap Remington ($20 back in 2013) straightener finally kicked the bucket and I found myself hunting for a new straightener. In the end, I decided to purchase the xtava Pro-Satin Infrared Straightener. After reading a lot of reviews raving about this straightener I was really excited to try this on my own hair. It came in very nice packaging and came with its own insulated pouch, which I really liked. The cord is very long which is also a plus. I use the L'Oreal Sleek It Heatspray and with my old straightener, my hair was VERY soft after I was done. With this straightener, the hair is definitely where I want it to be but it doesn't seem to seal the follicle as nicely, nor does it leave my hair anywhere near as shiny. I had to crank up the heat a little bit but it just doesn't seem to grab at my roots the same way. My biggest complain is the button placement on this thing. I CANNOT straighten my hair without accidentally shutting it off or switching the temperature every 5 minutes. It is extremely annoying. The whole infrared thing seems just for show––I didn't notice anything better or different about how my hair felt. I gotta say, the straightener itself is beautiful and the design is very appealing, but for the price I expected a more user-friendly button placement or at least a noticeable effect from the red-light thing. I'm too lazy to return this and I feel like I will get used to this. If you don't mind the button placement this is a good straightener depending on your hair type. If it helps to know, I have Type 3C hair so I apply heat to my roots 3-4 times with the straightener and 2 on the tips. I did NOT receive any kind of freebie for my review, so you can take it seriously.

Awesome flat iron! Will get the job done!!
This flat iron is awesome!! It goes through my hair so smoothly. It doesn't snag my hair at all. It doesn't leave the burnt smell in my hair, like some flat irons do, my hair still smells as good as it did after it was washed. My hair is thinned out right now but normally it has about a medium thickness to it. It is medium length and is wavy when not straightened. This flat iron gets the job done. I also use this on my daughters hair. Her hair is really, really thick and curly. She has super long hair and it takes no time to straighten her hair, mine takes about 10 minutes, hers about 30. It gets all of the curls out and it stays that way all day. It is a blessing to her when she is feeling fed up with the curls. The only con I'm going to give this flat iron is the buttons. I have turned it off on accident without realizing it and turned it down without knowing it because the buttons are so easy to press. It is all about finger placement though. If you can remember to hold it the right way, which I sometimes forget, then you won't have a problem. The flat iron doesn't take long to heat up so it really isn't that big of a deal. It's just more irritating than an inconvenience. It isn't so much a problem that it deserves anything less than 5 stars. I'd give it more if I could because it is, for me, all about how well the flat iron does what it is supposed to do.

Works great on long, thick, relaxed hair!!
Perfect for me! I love this thing!!! The good: 1. The size. The size is great! It's actually not as clunky as it looks in the photo--I thought it was gonna be much bigger than it actually was! But at the same time, it is also wide so you can get in a good amount of hair. The size is perfect. I have long and thick hair and I can get it all done in about 20-30 minutes! 2. So smooth! It is really smooth! It does not drag and pull on your hair like some other flat irons. It's like silk almost! Your hair will slide through. 3. The edges don't get that hot. I am EXTREMELY awkward with my hands and it's hard for me to do my hair because of that. So I have a fear of burning myself because I can't hold instruments properly. Well! The chances of burning yourself is pretty low with this flat iron! The sides don't get that hot, so you can get really close to your scalp (for us black chicks with new growth!) without burning yourself. So that's awesome! 4. Convenience. It heats up in a SNAP, and you can toss it right in the thermo bag without waiting for it to cool down. Awesome! Quick and easy. Also, the cord swivels and the buttons are easy to press. The screen is digital and easy to read as well. The bad: 1. WHAT GENIUS DECIDED TO PUT THE BUTTONS ON THE SIDE RIGHT WHERE YOU HOLD IT?!?! Terrible button placement! I was using this thing and after like 10 minutes I realized that I was on a heat setting WAY higher than I set it! I accidentally kept pushing the buttons and turning up the heat! Now I luckily have pretty durable hair so it could take it, but not everyone's hair can take heat like that and the button placement can actually cause some serious hair damage on accident. So be sure to periodically check the temperature and be conscious of where you hold the iron! The button placement is annoying and to refer back to my previous note--the buttons are EASY to press! So you can easily accidentally press one. After every section, check the temperature to make sure it's on the same setting as before! (Also, if you're a lefty, you may have a bad time holding the iron without pressing the buttons!) 2. The temperature increments. I'm not sure of the actual numbers, but you increase and decrease the temperature by big values. Like you jump from 350 to 375 and then 410 I think. There's some middle ground there that might work better for some people but they don't have that option. But overall I really, REALLY love this flat iron! I think it is incredible for the price and I'm so happy I bought it. It cuts my hair time in half and gets my hair looking AAAAAAHHHHMAZING. I hope it has longevity because I want to keep it forever! If this iron dies from natural causes lol I will most likely buy another one before getting a different flat iron. Notes: 1. I do notice a burning smell sometimes though. :/ I had my hair on 350 once, and then 410 (cause 350 wasn't cutting it lol). I did notice a bit of a burning smell. 2. If you have shoulder length hair, the size should still be okay. But anything shorter may require a smaller or thinner flat iron. This is for (IMO) medium to long hair. The size is not ridiculously wide but it is kinda wide. 3. When you put it in the bag, I suggest you lay the cord on top of the bag after you zip it up. The BAG is thermal, I'm not so sure about the cord! I put the iron in the bag then zip it up, place the cord over the bag, and then put it back in the box.
