Hirt's Victorian Parlor Palm - Chamaedorea - 4" Pot - Live Plant

I bought this to improve the air quality in my home. I generally dislike palms (the big spiky ones you see outside) and wasn't expecting to find this one so very... endearing. When I took it out of the box, I wondered if I'd ordered a fake plant by mistake, it was so vigorous and unfazed by its days in a dark, overheated box. It is real, though. And... jaunty. Perky, even. Unwilted, unbrowned, not so much as a broken leaf. Even though I got the smallest, least-expensive one listed, its foliage is thick enough to be all tangled up with each other into a tiny bonsai jungle. Not quite lush, but very far indeed from sparse. After removing it from the box, I proceeded to ignore it on my sunny, scorching doorstep for a day. It didn't care. I brought it inside and left it on the floor in the dark entryway for a while. It was fine there. I moved it to an upstairs room by an east-facing window late in the afternoon. It's cool with that, too. I should probably mention comparing it to other Chamaedorea determined by NASA to be effective in removing toxic gasses and particulate matter from air, or studies that show Chamaedorea elegans helps regulate indoor humidity, or stuff. There's plenty of info about that just a search-engine-of-your-choice away, should you be interested in it. I should also give it another week or so of the abuse and neglect that will probably typify its time in my home before reviewing it, to make sure it's as "indestructible" as advertised -- although the reading I've done supports that claim; it may not thrive, but it will soldier on through the battering storms of my apathy and forgetfulness. But really, I'm reviewing it prematurely specifically to mention that this thing is just darling. I've ordered another and am planning out where to put a third. It's cute. I was not expecting cute. Cute is not the word that comes to mind when I think "houseplant". Nonetheless, this houseplant is, in point of fact, cute. ___________________________ Edited to add: I've since bought another, a 6" plant. I initially received a 4" plant instead; I let Hirt's know about it on Thursday and heard back from them in 15 minutes. I received the replacement plant on Saturday. Amazing response times from Hirt's! The mistaken 4" plant is thriving next to its twin; both are gorgeous and healthy. The 6" plant is definitely larger and thicker, well worth the price difference, not just a 4"-pot plant in a larger pot. At this size, it's less an adorable bonsai jungle and more a full-on serious and somewhat showy houseplant. It, too, arrived in excellent condition, without browning, wilting, broken stems, or any other signs of damage or illness.

First and foremost this is an absolutely wonderful vendor to do business with. I got a very little plant. I knew it would be small. I'd never imagined one could receive a live plant in the mail and it be lovely when opened. Well, I killed the first one. I'm sure it was my fault (now) This company is so incredibly kind, they sent me another beautiful palm. The directions say you have to baby it which is somewhat true. It also says something like, "it likes heat. Keep in a cool spot" I'm not kidding. LOL!!! But the most important of all is it evidently loves cold weather. Mine does anyway. I had it out in the Summer heat and it did not like that, and started dying like the first one. I put it on my covered porch and it started growing around August. Oh, I had to take it out of a small planter I had it in. It likes to spread out. So, now it's getting into the 30s and look at it!!! New sprouts coming up. I shan't leave it out any longer; however; I fear it will die in the heated house. I recommend this plant because it's cute as heck(if you can get it in a partly sunny, cool location in a medium to large pot) Customer service is perfect. And it's inexpensive. Hope it lives!!!! I have attached a picture of it today November 19th 2015. I bought (the first anyway) on May 5th 2015. The second one was replaced immediately after my contacting the company.

A month and a half later, and it's still going strong! And it's living in a preschool classroom, where almost daily the children pick it up and carry it around to look at it and tell me that it's growing. It arrived healthy and well packed, in packing peanuts. The box was labeled "live plant", which hopefully meant a little extra care was taken with it. It did arrive only about halfway filled with dirt, but more can be easily added. It's a great price for a plant for anywhere, especially one in a classroom with lots of young children. 11/24/18 UPDATE My original plant, which I wrote about above, did really well. It lasted a year, surviving heartily, until someone else took care of it for a little while, didn't drain it, and it suffered from root rot. Last month, I ordered another Victorian Parlor Palm. It arrived looking healthy and did okay in the beginning, but now, it's been steadily dying and I'm not sure why. Most of the fronds are still green but completely dried out and everything is drooping down. It's getting enough water and draining well. I've been misting the leaves, too. I also repotted it, in hopes that might revitalize it, but it hasn't. I'm not sure why this one isn't surviving. I'm going to try pruning out all the dried out fronds, which is pretty much all of them, but at this point, I'm not sure if anything can perk it back up.

I was a little concerned when I saw that it had shipped on Friday via USPS and had a delivery date estimation of 5 to 7 days later though it showed a lot of movement I was still concerned... however I received the plant two days after delivery it was beautiful sturdy no leaves were missing none of the stems were broken.. if I had one complaint it would be the box was a couple inches too small because the plant came a little bit curved but Not broken so I am extremely happy that I purchased this plant and for anybody who has questions about whether or not they want to purchase it because the price is a little too good to be true I say go for it I got a super healthy plant for a very very good price

Box arrived smashed and torn, with styrofoam peanuts spilling out. There was nothing on the outside that said "handle with care--live plants" or anything like that. We ordered four plants. The plastic pots for three of those were crushed, which I guess is OK because will be re-potting, but shows how badly this was packaged. The plants were alive and the soil was still moist, but very, very cold. I would think the seller would package them to ensure they plants don't freeze this time of year. Also, these plants were much smaller than other reviewers, no more than 7 inches including the pots (which are about 3 inches tall).

I purchased the "4 inch plastic pot" from seller JMBamboo. The picture shown for this product has a plant with about two dozen fairly mature branches, some branches having up to twelve leaflets. The plant in the picture seems to be about a foot tall. The plant I received has about seven tiny branches, each with only two leaflets. The plant is about 5 or 6 inches tall. I found this extremely disappointing because I expected to receive a much more mature plant based on what was shown to me in the product picture, and I'm aware that the plant I received could take years to reach the size of the plant that was shown in the picture. I cannot recommend this if you are looking to receive a more mature plant, as I was rightfully expecting based on the picture shown. The written description fails to accurately describe what the buyer will be receiving, yet it potentially misleads the buyer by describing the characteristics of the average mature Victorian Parlor Palm. Be aware.

beautiful full healthy palm! Pictures are from after having it for a couple of months. Slightly bigger but these babies are slow growers! She is thriving under my grow lights, humidifier at night, and every other day mistings with weekly waterings, and every other week given plant food! This company will give you a beautiful full healthy plant! you won't be disappointed!! FYI: During shipping, there was no label on my box stating that there was a live plant inside and there was also no heating pad to keep the soil warm. So if its cold just keep an eye out for it and bring it in right away and you should be fine!

Purchased 9 months ago, currently 16" tall and 28" diameter. Placed on wall between two windows and it has grown wide to reach the sunlight on both sides. Lots of new growth and a unique look compared to other houseplants. A bargain beauty that adds character to any room. UPDATE: repotted last spring at 12 months, very shallow roots, progressively grew less healthy. Tried various locations, light conditions and hydrometer for proper moisture to no avail. Gave up and sent to garden in the sky at 20 months. Was a great plant for a year. If I were to acquire another, I would not repot annually, maybe at the 2 or 3 year mark. Having such shallow roots the 1 gallon container ( with mild spring and fall fertilizer ) likely would have had plenty of nutrients and given more time for root system to grow before shocking by repotting.
