The Avdelmate rivet is a two-piece, non-structural breakstem rivet consisting of a rivet and a tubular component. Although they are in the blind fastener family, they are not blind fasteners as access is required from both sides of the workpiece to install the rivet and tubular component. Each component is inserted from opposite sides of the application such that the rivet component inserts into the tubular component. When the rivet is installed, the two components are held together by a bulge created as the mandrel head is pulled through the rivet. It should be clear that the strength of a joint created in this manner is not as strong as other breakstem rivets. Therefore, the Avdelmate® rivet must only be used in applications with hollow centers, such as joining tubing and fastening road signs to the post, or extremely soft solid materials or assemblies, such as cardboard or foam honeycomb structures. However, because the joint is contained within the application, there is some level of tamper resistance and the tubular and rivet component have the same head configuration so the finished look is the same from both sides. And with no protruding rivet tail on the blind side, there is a level of safety inherent to the Avdelmate rivet that isn't present in other breakstem rivets.
