It's IR, it needs to see the beam, but it works really well. The light is great.

What are the amps on this unit and is there a price break for 50+ units?

depends on your actual voltage. It's a 50 watt light, so at full power, at 110v, you will get 50 / 110 = 0.45 amps per unit. at 120v, you get 0.42 amps. You can technically run 33 of these units off of one 15 amp breaker with no other load. I would not suggest that. Maximum load should never ever exceed 90% of total capacity. I hate to see anything over 80%. At 90%, you can have 30 units and at 80%, you can have 26 max. This is assuming no other load.If you purchase the 30 watt version, these numbers change to 0.27 amps and 0.25 amps respectively with 55 units at 100%, 50 at 90% and 44 at 80%.These units rarely ever draw their max rated current but I have seen instances where they have exceeded the rating. Also please note that a circuit breaker is intended as a fail safe device. Please never rely on these to work. When doing your circuit calculations, ALWAYS keep your load well under what it can handle.
