Perfect for: Collectors of illustrated classics or artfully designed books Anyone who enjoys timeless stories, from the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm to Egyptian mythology to Greek classics Adding to the shelf alongside books like D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths , Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, Stephen Fryโs Greek Mythology trilogy ( Mythos , Heroes , Troy ), or Madeline Miller's Circe and Song of Achilles Review: Wonderful stories! - I absolutely loved these stories! I read one each night so I could enjoy each one. The book is beautiful and very well made with a ribbon bookmark. The drawings were beautiful. I plan to order the other books in this series. Review: Loved reading it, especially outloud - The stories were cute, and while I am not an expert on Scandinavian/Norse culture, it felt accurate to how culturally folktales are told in the region. There are tidbits on why stories tend to follow particular themes (such as why most main characters in stories are the youngest sibling). They do provide sources to where the short stories were sourced, so you can tell the authors didn't just make them up and try to pass them off as traditional. As for the content of the stories themselves, there are some damn clever protagonists. Art is super gorgeous too! From a critical standpoint, the author's voice may be difficult for some people, since it is written the way you'd expect traditionally oral stories to be told. I can read it out loud to kids and keep them interested, but just reading it late at night quietly can put me to sleep, since the flow is on the choppy side. If you like to write, there's good inspiration material in here. And if you're interesting in getting to know more about norse folk culture, check it out!

Great Book!
Arrived in amazing condition! I would also like to mention the fantastic cover, absolutely gorgeous. I love this book so much, and I find myself frequently re-reading it. Great stories, great writing, and beautiful artwork. I also loved the new book smell it had, y'know the nice smell of new parchment. I will absolutely be buying from this author again.

Clunky Prose
Clunky prose, but beautifully designed layout and nice illustrations. I have to take a star off because the writing/ translation is awful! Very wordy and confusing at times when reading out loud. From a major publisher like chronicle books, I expect much higher quality writing/ translations. But the bones of the stories are there, and if you can get over the writing style, these are great folktales to read with the family.

Beautifully Crafted Collection of Stories
I bought this for myself and my children as they are at an age where their ancestry is becoming more interesting to them. The stories themselves are short enough to read in just a few minutes, and I like that the country of origin is listed below the story title. The book is very well made and has a ribbon bookmark. My favorite part is the illustrations. They are beautiful and I would buy them separately to frame if I could! Iโm so glad I bought this as it is something I plan on handing down.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL BOOK..
WHEN I FIRST RECEIVED THIS FABULOUS BOOK,I WAS STRUCK BY THE GORGEOUS EMBOSSED COVER WITH SCENES FROM .THE VARIOUS LANDSCAPES WITHIN.RATHER LIKE THE "WINTER TALES"BOOK REVIEWED ELSEWHERE,THESE TALES CREATE A COSY FIRELIGHT FEELING THAT REALLY ENHANCES THE WONDERFUL TALES WITHIN.HOWEVER,WHILE "WINTER TALES"TELLS WORLDWIDE STORIES THESE STORIES ARE FROM THE NORTH LANDS OF EUROPE (NORWAY, SWEDEN, FINLAND,ICELAND AND DENMARK),AND IN SO DOING GIVE A UNIQUELY NORDIC PERSPECTIVE TO THE TALES.THE STORIES ARE DIVIDED INTO 3 CATEGORIES, NAMELY "TRANSFORMATION","WIT"."AND "JOURNEYS ",EACH SECTION HAVING TALES THAT RELATE TO THE TOPIC...I'M NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING MORE,IN CASE I SPOIL THE SURPRISE THAT AWAITS THOSE WHO BUY THIS FANTASTIC BOOK...APART FROM ENTER THE WORLD OF THE NORSE PEOPLE AND THOROUGHLY ENJOY

Lovely tales but bad print
I love the illustrations of Ulla Thynell but this print was rather bad. The colours were so muted and dark that it all looked muddy and appalling. Some illustrations weren't even pretty which I find so disappointing knowing how beautiful her work is. This print doesn't do it justice.
