BECOME STARRY EYED OVER MICHAEL HOLIDAY'S UNDIMMED VOCAL TALENT
With a voice that somehow echoed the iconic Crosby, Michael Holliday (1924-1963) was a popular radio and television star who seemed to have the world at his feet but despite some hits his career nose-dived due to changing musical tastes and personal problems. Obviously success did not ensure happiness. This compilation of singles from his most active period is proof enough of the singer’s vocal talent with all eleven of the hits he enjoyed including the #1 THE STORY OF MY LIFE and STARRY EYED among the thirty-one tracks packed onto this disc. Many of the songs are country and western in format; a style very suited to Holliday’s striking voice and LITTLE BOY LOST, CARELESS HANDS, HAVE I TOLD YOU LATELY THAT I LOVE YOU? MY HEART IS AN OPEN BOOK and FOUR WALLS are prime examples whilst updating oldies SKYLARK and I WONDER WHO’S KISSING HER NOW? ideally suit the singer’s style. Covers of US hits include THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS, HOT DIGGITY and THE GAL WITH THE YALLER SHOES are amongst them. Bonus track pairs Michael with the equally popular Lita Roza in a BBC live radio version of LET’S DO IT.As a fair representation of Holliday’s recording career this is a top-notch compilation and it’s likely had he lived, his career might well have carried into musicals as well as a few interesting concept albums.Excellent notes describe the singer’s life and career with remastered sound and general presentation adding to this collection’s worth.
