Awesome Watch... The display could be a bit bigger though
**Edit** - Ok, I find myself wearing the watch religiously now. I originally mentioned the atomic option was not worth it but it totally is. That feature has turned into my favorite part of the watch. I have worn this thing through hell and back, not taking it easy on it at all. The more I wear it the better it got. The display is not hard to read, I love the look of it. I went from a 4 to a 5 rating as I have to have it on me daily, I use it so much. It's a damn good watch, the size is perfect and it has everything you need. I love the blacked out version, kind of wish they made one in a FDE variation. Either way it's a solid work horse and can handle anything you through at it. I was unsure at first but it totally exceeded my expectations and then some. Ok, so I am been wearing a Casio W735H-8AVCF for a few years now. It's nothing fancy, the display is nice, 10 year battery and vibration alarm. However, it was not the G-Shock that I loved and used in the service, it is the Walmart $20 cheap G-Shock wanna-be. So after months of searching I jumped for this G-Shock, the GW-2310FB. I was stoked when it came in, finally a watch I am used to. My first impression was wow, this thing looks sleek but I immediately noticed the actual screen was a bit smaller than my cheap Casio. The negative display is actually really cool and no problems at all reading it, especially in the sun and with sunglasses on. Now I got this due to the solar power and atomic time keeping. I saw folks in other reviews say that they are having issues getting their watch to full power. Right out of the box mine was ready to go. It was delivered at mid power but I tossed it on and did a 1 hour photo shoot outside. By the end of the shoot I was at full power. The battery charges fast outside so no issues there. The other reason I bought this watch was for the atomic time keeping which I actually found useless. Do not buy this watch for this feature. It comes pre loaded with time zones and a quick manual adjustment in your area and the watch does the rest. There is absolutely no reason to have a time sync. Even with a time sync you will still have to adjust what region you're in manually and the watch adjusts the time based on what region you choose automatically. I wish I would have known that when eliminating what watch I wanted to invest in beforehand. It sounds cool, but more of a hassle than anything. I tried to manually get a signal and after two tries I got an error... but again, it's not needed at all. Now for the size.. I don't get it. My old cheap watch registers at a 44mm bezel size, this says a 46mm and I wanted a bit bigger watch than my older watch but it is not, at all. It is not as beefy as the other G-shocks which I did not want anyway. I was not looking for a big 55mm target on my wrist. My wrist is 6 inches roughly so I wanted a bit bigger than my 44mm watch and less than 55mm. I thought the 46mm this measures on paper would be perfect, but it just seems small. I would compare this to a rugged looking sports watch. The case is beefy (not overly, it flows good) and that cuts into the display where my other watch is not shock rated and the case feels cheap but larger display (it was $20). This would be my only complaint really, I wish the display was a bit bigger. The watch is solid, the case is beefy and I have seen a few complain about the strap. The strap is fine. I prefer this strap over any of my other watches. It fits my 6 inch wrist perfect. The material does not feel cheap, it feels like a solid watch band. The back light is an awesome looking green and yes, it does have a solid auto backlight. That is a plus because with the negative display, you're going to need it at night. It gives the watch a night vision type of feel. The buttons... yea they suck. They are small. My cheap watch has some nice buttons I can press on the fly. This watch, the buttons are in the case and you really gotta show them who's boss. This is good and bad because there is no way you're going to accidentally change settings which I have done with my old watch in the past, but they could be a bit larger. In all this is a great time piece. I love the solar power, the multiple time lay out, it has your basic alarms (4 plus a snooze), stop watch, and timer. The black out design is solid, I really like that it is not a huge flashy target on my wrist. The display is unique, different and very functional. The backlight is nice and bright. The strap will fit a small to medium wrist perfect. Downfalls... The atomic option is not needed, and not worth the extra $$$ at all... it really is pointless. The display and buttons could be a little bit bigger. Had the display and buttons been a smidge larger this watch would hands down be the best digital ever. I give it 4 stars out of 5 due to the size of the display and buttons only... I expected this watch to fit a bit better than my cheap Casio and strap wise it does, just not the display. This will still be my everyday watch, it feels tough, good quality and lots of options that I probably won't even use all of them. I do recommend this watch if you are looking for a solar powered piece. The good thing about the smaller case is that it won't get snagged on clothing, the watch will go with any outfit really. Unless you are still using the old bag phone and have never heard of the internet, the atomic part is pointless. If you are looking for a larger G-Shock style piece with Chuck Norris sized wrists, you may want to look at other models. I hope this review helps!!!!!

Stealth looks, high value.
Any gripes I have with this watch are entirely my own fault. I own many GShocks and love them all. Digital, Analogue Aviation etc. Over the time of ownership I began to build a mater list of what I wanted in my next one. I wanted it to be atomic, I wanted it to be solar, I wanted easy transition between time zones and world time. Lastly, I began to have a yearning for a murdered out black on black watch. Does Casio make such an amalgamation? In fact they do. Case in point, THIS WATCH. Likes: Utility Features - Unlike other atomic watches I've owned, this one hooked up to the Atomic clock on the first night and synced just like it should. No need for manual sync initially. I also really like the layout. Shows me everything I need in one look: Time (with seconds), date (with month), and day of the week. I use the world clock one button push (top right button) and I can have repeated access to Zulu (UTC) without having to do the math. Easy enough but it gets old doing it all the time. Second, simple alarm. I use it for power naps/cooking/and reminders throughout the day. Easy to set and easy to turn off. Stopwatch, who doesn't need one of those? Lots of utility there. Count down timer, way useful in the weight room for switching to different sets/stations without having to mess up your rhythm by checking your watch. Structural features - IT'S A G-SHOCK. Good luck killing it. It will probably out live you. I use my Gshocks for dirtier/grimier/outdoor or under the truck days. Salt water, suncreen, engine oil, sweat, hydraulic fluid, and blood. No issues just washing it all off the watch. That's what it was made for. Also use Gshocks in the jet when I'm at work. I can wail on them and have no regrets about it. They are my most reliable piece of kit. People come to me for a hack to get their watches synced up. Ballin. Lastly, the auto backlight feature. You don't know how useful it is until you have it available to you. I love not needing to press the button for backlight at night. Just move my wrist like I'd be checking it normally then BOOM, a glorious display of time. Doing it with no hands (STS) has now spoiled me. Dislikes: Dimensions. The watch is smaller in all dimensions than any of my previous G's. My own fault for not crosschecking this. It's not diminutive but it isn't super substantial either. I have a fairly big wrist and am on the 3rd notch from the end. The band is thinner than I expected but overall the watch still functions great and looks good on the wrist. The buttons are smallish I can get over that. No one likes the small letters on an iPhone am I right? All my gripes are strikes against me for not checking, the watch is fine. Last oddity is that even after days in the sun, it still never charges above MID. Overall: For $100 I think it is a GREAT addition to any collection for looks and utility.

Rock-solid G-Shock — reliable and timeless
This is exactly what you expect from a G-Shock: tough, reliable, and built to last. The atomic timekeeping and solar charging make it basically maintenance-free, which I love. It’s comfortable to wear, easy to read, and feels like a watch you could depend on for years. Classic G-Shock quality that absolutely meets expectations.

Solar Power, Atomic Synchronization, for under $100. Just don't use the Backlight too often.
UPDATE: I eventually returned this watch for the GW2310-1 instead. The silver ring is on the case of the 2310-1 is pretty understated. The "positive" display of the GW2310-1 is much more readable, and requires less use of the backlight which is a real battery killer. I have also found that for me, sychnronization with the time server down here in South Florida is actually more reliable when I wear the watch, as it appears to use me as an antenna. This is the opposite of my Citizen. I still recommend this watch or it's positive brother the GW2310-1. It's just a matter of taste on how you like your display. G-shocks are not known for their subtlety. In fact a quick trip to their website will reveal that it appears that each subsequent G-Shock model attempts to out "G" their brethren. Now if you like the G-Shock vibe, that is right up your alley. But some of us prefer a more "muted" sensibility when it comes to watches. If describes you, then this is the watch for you. Make no mistake, this is still a G-Shock, but the lettering is now blacked out and simply engraved. This watch uses it's shape and color to define it's "toughness" instead of garish lettering. The main display consists of a battery power meter, day of week, day/month and time display. A second time zone can be displayed at a simple press of the button. The backlight can be set to either light up at the flick of your wrist, or via a button press beneath the watch face. The backlight is a real power drain so you should use it very sparingly. The backlight is not overly bright, but will adequately light the display in a darkened room. The negative display of the LCD (white characters with black background) is a mixed bag for some. If you are looking for the standard LCD version of this watch, you might want to check out the GW2310-1 instead. But I prefer the "blackout" case better than the one on the GW2310-1. If I am honest, I must say I prefer a positive display, but it's not a deal breaker for me. If you are brave, you could always do some surgery and change this from negative to positive using You-Tube videos, but it's not for the feint of heart. As far as features go, this one has almost all the ones you need, and none of the fluff that you don't. You won't find a compass, altimeter or thermometer on this one. You get a straight world timezone watch with stopwatch and countdown timer. The party pieces to this watch are the solar battery and the atomic synchronization. 1. First the solar battery. You should not need to replace the battery on this watch as it charges from light. Even ambient light in a room is sufficient for charging to occur. That being said, you still can't go banana sandwich and expect indoor lighting to compensate for frequent backlighting. The manual states that one 1.5 sec lighting event takes 6 HOURS of indoor charging to recover from. Those that frequenetly use their backlight will find themselves running low on battery fairly quickly. If you are using the backlight, you need to make sure you are charging using sunlight or another bright source, otherwise, you will kill your battery since normal indoor lighting simply can't keep up. And the auto backlight should never be used while driving because you can easily kill a weeks worth of charging on your way home. Better you turn auto backlight off and use the light very sparingly. The second party piece is the Atomic Synchronization. This watch, gets it's signal from the NIST time servers in Colorado, The watch automatically tries to synchronize several times during the night, each night starting at midnight. I live in South Florida at the very fringe of reception and it will often fail to synchronize. My citizen watch has a much better receiver in it, but of course it's about 5 times more expensive. But so far I have never gone 7 days without synchronization which is sufficient enough to keep the watch within 3.5 seconds of official NIST time, so it's not bad. Overall, this is a really good watch with a strong feature set. A solar rechargeable battery that should preclude the need to buy replacement cells and the ability to synchronize with the Atomic Clock in Fort Collins. It is a great value, as long as you know the limitations.

G-Shock review
I wanted to get a G-Shock for quite sometime now. This is my first one… I really liked the looks and the feature set of this model – let me be frank – I was hooked by the promotion images!!! Like the rest of you, I was skeptical about the negative display, especially having read several reviews mentioning visibility problems. One issue raised was inadequate contrast of the digits and a second issue mentioned was glare, especially outdoors. I decided to go on and order hpwever, although I knew that a return would be next to impossible since I live in Greece and shipping cost would be quite high to do so. But still I wanted to take the chance. The watch arrived today (06/17/2015). Good packaging, totally secure, easy to open. I opened the box place indoors. The glossy-black metallic container of the watch looks cool, but still my anxiety was sky-rocketed as I was ready to take the watch itself out and take a first look. Taking it in my hand, I turned its face towards mine… Visibility indoors: Excellent. The display is totally readable. The digits look sharp and bright. Really close to the promotion images on Amazon… What a relief! The glass is shiny indeed, but there’s no way I would say it’s glary. It does not distract as you look at the face of the watch – that is indoors. I was also relieved to find out that the Atomic feature will be functional in my area (I was totally unsure about this). But, thank god, Athens is included! Setting up my local time-zone and time was a breeze. I have not dealt with additional features yet. So, I wore the watch and went to work. The weather was great in the morning, sunny and warm. Visibility outside (sun low in the sky/ no clouds): Excellent. I could read the time with no problem whatsoever. The digits still look clear & bright and glare is well in control as long as you look at the watch in an angle that makes sense. If you turn it away from you for more than 30-35 degrees it will turn glossy, but by that time, you will also lose contact with the face as the plastic surrounding it gets in the way. Visibility outside (sun high in the sky/ no clouds): Excellent+. Under direct sunlight the digits look even more sparkly and clear. The glass is completely transparent & clear. Overall this is the best situation I have encountered today. I kept looking at the watch as it looked so beautiful, I was amazed!!! Visibility outside (sun in high position/ cloudy): Excellent. I also had the chance to encounter some clouds in the sky and here is my opinion: Clouds tend to enhance glare, but this is only minor. It builds up faster as you turn the watch away from you, but nothing big. Overall, let me say just one thing: I would have never thought there’s some issue with this watch if I had not read the reviews. The only reason that I wrote this is just to express my own comments to the criticism. One last thing about the size: I’ve seen bulkier G-Shocks and I like the fact that this one is not too big. I had the impression it would be bigger from the images, but I like time pieces normal-sized (as opposed to over-sized) and I’m 100% satisfied. So, great watch, gorgeous looking and sporty, and it’s a G-Shock. It’s going to last forever.

It really is simple to operate and it keeps excellent time. The automic clock sync is a great ...
I waited over a month to write a review because I wanted to allow time to figure out the functions and see how it performed for at least that long before I made a determination. This watched arrived with a full charge straight out of the box and has never moved off of full status. Controls are a BREEZE and this is the first G Shock I've ever owned, and first digital watch for that matter. It really is simple to operate and it keeps excellent time. The automic clock sync is a great function, but as the instructions say, it's best to keep it by a window pointed in the direction of where the signal originates and if not, you will likely get an ERR message (failure). I keep my watch at my bedside and the atomic sync attempts at the top of every hour from midnight - 5am, but has yet to be successful because of where I keep it.i simply sync it manually in the window either when I wake up or later in the day, which takes maybe 5 minutes. This watch is very comfortable and lightweight, and although several reviewers mentioned the band not being that great, I personally have no issues with it. I don't baby things at all and have banged this watch quite a bit on steel, wood, etc. with no visible scuffs and it keeps on rocking. Waterproofing is legit. Showering, swimming, even scuba diving it will be fine up to I believe 600 meters. The negative display, which some have said is too dark to read, I find no problem with. The light is fantastic and the deep setting of the face provides a sleek look. The only con I have with this watch is that the alarm is INCREDIBLY low volume and is typically not enough to wake me up. I'd say this watch sits no more than 3 feet from my head and I have yet to be awakened by it. A few reviewers have mentioned this as well and this is the only negative that really stands out to me. Overall, 5 stars and it's honestly a steal at $90 (what I paid). Highly recommended for anyone who does a lot of hiking/outdoors activities and manual labor/lots of working with hands and in spaces you'll bang it around.

Awesome black "stealth" aesthetics, legendary Casio G-Shock ruggedness, solar atomic, but...
Pros: Stealth black on black on black appearance, synchronizes with time signal each night to keep extreme accuracy, solar powered so you won't have to change batteries for a long long time, mineral crystal very scratch resistant, very rugged, durable design. It's a G-Shock after all. Cons: Negative display (gray digits with black background) can be difficult to see in low light conditions, but that is what the backlight is for. I put up with the few times I have a hard time seeing the display in exchange for its wicked murdered-out appearance. The strap buckle tends to slip and the strap end will flip out, which is a minor aggravation, but my solution was to fasten it in place where it needs to stay for me with some 12lb test Black Widow fishing line, a large sewing needle and some needle nosed pliers. Update 7/6/2022: It has stopped syncing with the time signal. At all. I have tried placing it in different windows around my house, alongside my original solar atomic Casio G-Shock, and even though the original is now 22 years old works perfectly, even still with the original battery, it receives the time signals almost every night at midnight, but this one I bought just a few years ago now won't receive the time signal ever anymore. Everything else works fine, just a shame that a watch so much older still works perfectly, while this watch has started to fail. I have one of the original G-Shock solar-atomic watches that I have had since they first came out, and it still works perfectly. It's well-worn, and has been battered and abused, but it still works perfectly. I bought this one just to have another newer, nicer looking solar atomic watch. I love it. I wear it most days as it has become my current favorite do-anything, rugged, get-dirty watch. Both of my G-Shock atomic-set watches sync every night at around midnight, and are always perfectly synchronized with each other. This reassures me that the time sync function is as accurate as advertised. I recommend this watch to anyone looking for a unique timepiece that is tough, accurate, waterproof, shock proof, and shouldn't need a replacement battery for many many years. Rechargeable batteries do eventually go bad, although my first one (GW300) is going on 12 years and still has the battery it came with. All you have to do to keep it charged is wear it a couple days outdoors a month to keep it charged. They have a power meter on the dial (high, med, low) so you know if it needs a charge. I can't say enough about the Casio G-Shock quality, and the atomic - solar features. No discussions with people any more about what time it really is. Very very happy with this watch.

This is a great watch. I'm very pleased with it
This is a great watch. I'm very pleased with it. My first impression was that it was a little bit hard to read the display because a glare on the watch face can make it unreadable. After having the watch for over a month, I have no difficulty reading it; maybe I just got used to which way to look at it so I can read it? Regardless, I can always tell what the time is, as well as the date, and I can get UTC with one button push (for aviation purposes). The watch is great because it corrects for daylight savings, updates every night, and charges itself by the sun. I really don't spend much time outside, but I have never seen the charge indicator less than max. I can always see on the face that it updated overnight. If it didn't update to the atomic time on the current date, the RCVD will disappear but you can go and see when the last time it actually received. I have had this happen occasionally when I am in a building overnight which blocks the signal. I always sleep with it on, even though it says to place it by the window overnight for signal reception. In my house this is not necessary. The backlight at night works really well and the button is easy to find. Overall, I have no complaints and would recommend this watch to anyone. My last 2 or 3 watches have always died sometime around or after battery changes, so this is why I wanted to get a solar. You can't find a watch that does everything this watch does for remotely close to the price, so CASIO has done a good job making this excellent and affordable.

Great night time watch thanks to the negative display.
The features of this watch are similar to other basic solar radio G-Shocks with minor differences: 1. The mode order is World Time, Alarm, Stopwatch, Timer 2. Cannot adjust seconds in Timer mode (only hours and minutes) 3. The watch wears smaller than many other G-Shocks (although a little bigger than a Square) 4. The Multi Band 6 radio reception seems a little less consistent than my other Multi Band 6 G-Shocks but still usually syncs. As usual for Casio, it is supremely comfortable to wear and built to a very high quality. The negative display - yes, it is harder to read in daytime and you'll need to use the backlight in dim conditions where you might not have to with a positive display. But at night when it is quite dark, this watch is fantastic. The backlight only illuminates the digits so the contrast is excellent. The display is actually more legibile with the backlight on than positive display watches where the entire LCD panel illuminates and tends to wash out from some viewing angles. I have also noticed that the backlight tends to be dimmer on the solar G-Shocks, presumably to conserve power. In combination with the negative display, the result is a very pleasing, gentle, high contrast, high visibility backlight. No blasting your eyes with a square inch of bright green glow in the middle of the night. Enough illumination to see the time but not so bright as to wreck your night vision or wake you up or bother a sleeping spouse. All in all, I love this watch. It has quickly become my most worn G-Shock and one of my favourites overall. 10/10
