Schrade SCHF37 Frontier 12.4in High Carbon Steel Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife with 7in Drop Point and TPE Handle for Outdoor Survival, Camping and Bushcraft

Great knife for the money. It's been my companion for seven years now, and it is one of my favorite knives ever. The 1095 steel has good edge retention and is relatively easy to sharpen. The powder coating has stood up to quite a beating over the years, and I've never had a spot of rust. It's an incredibly durable knife, being nearly a quarter inch thick at the spine, it's essentially a sharp pry bar. The shape of the handle fits comfortably in the hand, and the large chamfer allows for some extra bite if you need it. The only thing I wish was different about this knife is the serrations on the grip. Unless you tape it, or have some good gloves, you can really feel it in the web of your hand after a while. I've put this thing through mud, blood, walls, and wood whilst camping, hiking, hunting, and construction, and it keeps on going.

I'll give this knife 5 out of 5 stores in the context of its price range. For the price point it is simply very hard to do better and the only thing I can think of that compares are some of the other similar Schrade knives. I will say that I had to return the first knife that i ordered because it wasn't completely straight. While one would hope no company would ever release a product that is flawed/defective, for what you are buying at this pricepoint, you have to be a little realistic. I had read about this possible issue and so was prepared to expect this possibility. I simply returned it and got another one at no charge via Amazon Prime. The second one I receive was perfectly straight and razor sharp. The sheath is pretty uninspiring, but the firesteel they throw in is actually very good. That's worth at least another $5-$10. I haven't used the included sharpening stone so I can't comment on that. A lot of people complaining about the rough coating on the blade being too grippy in wood and rightfully so, but I just took some 1000 grit sand paper and lightly wet sanded it to get rid of the grippy surface. It's still got the coating but it's much smoother now. I may consider grinding down the jimping at some point, but Schrade is also coming out with the SCHF52 soon which is the same awesome knife with some improvements to the coating and handle contour and they fixed the aggressive jimping issue. While the tip isn't as stout as I'd like, but I don't plan on prying anything with it. Always remember that even a nice high quality knife is a poor excuse for a prybar and will usually be the weakest and most expensive prybar you'll ever use. Prying on any sort of strong material with the tip of ANY knife is a terrible idea. It is just fine for stabbing deep into wood or other materials however.

So, I like this knife. I like it a lot. The steel is right, the size is spot on, the sheath is very nice. The sheath has a plastic liner and is ballistic nylon, the belt loop velcro is super hard core hook and loop... it comes with a sharpening block, a ferrocerium rod and striker. These are nice things. It came very sharp. I stropped it when I got it and brought that thing to a literally hair shaving grade sharp. I've read reviews with rolled edges, or fairly dull blades on arrival, that wasn't my knife. Very nice factory edge. The issue is, the first thing I do, because it's a hollow grind, I don't go chop ice blocks, I don't baton with it, I cut some chicken. Breast, to be exact, partially frozen boneless chicken breast. It sliced, but not with ease. That coating on the blade, used to prevent rust, is some grippy, high traction shizzo. Meaning, as the blade penetrates an object, the object wants to grip and rip along the sides of that hollow grind. And the grip, there's my real issue. The pressure required to slice through that chicken required grip at the top of the handle, and the jimping is there. Not under my thumb, not on my palm, but right at the base of my first knuckle. And it ground in painfully. Now, if I were chopping, I'd be using a glove, and my left hand, but I was slicing, I didn't expect to need gloves, and when kitchen cutting, I work orthodox. That jimping is not placed where, for the work I do, i'd want it, and I suspect I'm not the only guy who would think that. Above that choil, that's where I'd place a jimped thumb ramp, if you need one. I don't need jimping, I don't like it, largely because it creates hot spots when i'm working... like this one did, when I was. No bueno. Interesting note, if you grip into that choil, and place your thumb about it on the blade, the jimping falls into the palm, and there, pressed into the meat of my thumb, it's fine, totally painless, but also functionally useless. Whatsmore, that coating is high enough traction that when cleaning the shredded chicken off the blade, it took some work. I had to do circular scrubs with my soapy brush in both directions to get all the chicken bits out of the coating texture. NO BUENO! So once done, I cleaned and dried the blade, then applied a light coating of mineral oil and we'll see how that impacts the next meat cutting task I assign this knife. On the plus side, the traction of the grip was in no way compromised when wet with soapy water, I still had good safe control over the blade. That's major points back in schrade's favor. Now you might ask, why am I doing a kitchen task with this knife, it's clearly not marketed as a kitchen knife. Well, what kind of knife is it, precisely? It's a camp knife, right? So I should be able to handle standard outdoor type duties. Lots of guy have shaved feather sticks with this blade. Lots of guys have batoned with it. No one on youtube has used it to kill or skin game, cuz you really don't do that on video. OK, so I simulated camp duties, which include killing something and prepping it for devouring, with chicken, but rather than do that in my wood pile, I did it in the luxury of my kitchen. Sue me. But, it's a camp knife, and that is a pretty basic duty, cutting meat. Cutting meat is the closest to combat you can reasonably get too, just in case you had to use the knife in a self defense scenario. This knife was tricky to slice meat with. Granted, it was partially frozen, but it was work getting the blade through that meat, it was not quick, it was not light duty. One could easily figure that, were I fighting a person with this, I can slash and cut, but let me tell you, I just recently had a small accident with an 18" Tramontina machete, and a bump sliced right into me. A bump. This was sawing with the blade and tearing from the coating. This is not a knife that, were I forced to defend myself or my family, that I would trust to plunge into a guy's ribs while I bite off his nose. It's not going through his ribs, it's just not. I might be able to twist it and work it into his stomach, but not through bone, no way. Were I slashing, I know this blade would glance off bones, so I cut and the opponent had her arm up, it'll cut some tendons, it'll cut some skin, but it's not cutting to or through the bone. Now, is that an unrealistic standard? Kind of. I did give the blade 4 stars because it is a nice knife. But it's not a great knife, and that's why I docked the star. There's a lot of room, especially in that coating, to reduce traction in it and allow that blade to really cut like it wants to. The weight and the grind WANT to cut, but the coating is just not right, and the grip doesn't provide the best kinetics to power that blade the way it needs to be powered. So let's assume this is a camp knife, if I cut wood with this, it will retain wood shards in the coating texture. That will not just wipe off, so you either get wood splinters in your food later, OR, you blow an unrealistic amount of water cleaning the blade, and risk it rusting. You could not easily move from one task to another because cleaning will be a bitch. Even if you're not killing game with it, let's say I'm slicing a summer sausage, or some cheese off a block. No friggin way could you slice some camp cheese with this shiv, no friggin way. What if you brought some jelly from home, you're planning a picnic with the mrs (or the other mister, I'm not judging), and you bring some boysenberry jam, and oops, you forgot your butter knife. If this knife got buried with you, and was discovered in 1000 years by a generation of quinpedal humans, that boysenberry jam? STILL IN YOUR COATING! And man, I hope that there were no socks in the pouch or bag with the knife when you packed it, because forget about lint. Lint, you'd be better off torching this knife to get the lint out than trying to clean the blade. Now, you could strip this coating off and just blue the blade, or mineral oil it, and brother, you better believe that's what I'll be doing. The scales are attached by three hex bolts, it's easy to remove, please do this. The issue will be whether or not you want to grind that jimping down. I kind of really really want to do that, and I suspect more owners of this blade would like to or have than have been public about that mod. You're welcome Amazon readers.

Bottom line: A great bang for the buck. However, at this price you can't realistically expect flawless build quality. Pros: Many high-end knives are made of 1095 steel, and it's a crude but well-proven blade material. 1/4 inch thickness makes this a hefty, hefty knife. The shrapener and firesteel are a nice touch, and the sheath is very serviceable. On paper, it's the same as an Esee or Ontario RAT knife for 1/3 or 1/2 the price. In reality, spending the extra money for craftsmanship and attention to detail may be a worthwhile expense. Complaint #1: The cutting edge The edge is keen (practically shaving-sharp), but the grind is very uneven. The primary grind on each side is different, and isn't centered. The point of the knife is therefore offset. This affects service somewhat ... but isn't a dealbreaker. It's entirely possible that most schf's come out of the factory perfect, but a mis-aligned grind is the most common complaint I've seen from others who have purchased the same knife. Complaing #2: The grip The gimping on the blade-side of the knife is extremely aggressive. With gloves, it's fantastic, but without, it's painful. The shape of the grip is also awkward. The main hump of the grip ends up right in the center of my middle finger (I wear L gloves typically), so I'm not sure what kind of paws this was designed for. Summary: If you don't mind investing time into a knife, this is a superb starting point. If you don't plan to use it frequently, this is a do-all solution for you. If you want a good primary fixed blade, pause and consider spending a bit more on something that has a more attentive manufacturer. It's a good knife, and is certainly worth the price.

I purchased this knife just before going on a family camping trip. On a previous camping trip, I used an axe to chop firewood to enjoy a nice campsite fireplace. Perhaps the blade was too dull, the wood was too wet, or other reason, but I ran into difficulty trying to cut the firewood into smaller pieces. Needless to say, this was getting increasingly frustrating, and I wasn't enjoying this part of the trip. However, after viewing videos of others batoning with a good knife I thought I should give this a try. When I received this knife I could hardly wait to open the box and check it out. Immediately, I was pleased with the weight, the grip, and feel of this tool. The ferro rod and sharpener turned out to be a great added bonus. So, we got to our campsite and set everything up, and I was looking forward to getting a good fire started (outside temperature was dropping quickly). I made a nice little stack of wood for the fireplace, and then I got to work. I began batoning the large pieces to make kindling for the fire and was almost giddy at how easy this was. Rather than striking the blade with wood, I used the same rubber mallet that we used to drive the tent stakes. I gave the knife quite a workout during this outing and the blade kept a good edge. It was very easy getting our fires started with the included ferro rod (using a petroleum dipped cottonball as fuel). I would definitely recommend this knife! Sent from my iPad

First use out of the box, thing snapped. I'm send this back to schrade. I really wanted to like this, but it seems they don't keep heat treatment in quality ranges. My blade was far to brittle to do anything beyond cut paper. Came razor sharp, looked really good, straight as an arrow, just bad heat treating :( I hope I get a new blade, I like the style and it fit my hand great, but it just crapped out really bad. EDIT: after receiving a replacement from schrade, the knife is a great working piece of kit. Batons like a beast, good belly for finer cutting and is a great primary or secondary knife. ( for if your primary knife must have a flat or scandi grind. ) this has a hollow grind, which hasn't stopped me from chopping with it. Obviously this doesn't replace my axe but it is a great tool that I could use if I didn't have one.

I was apprehensive as I awaited this knife, having read many reviewers reporting they received bent or asymmetric blades. I'm pleased to report I lucked out, as my blade is perfectly straight, and the grind/bevel perfectly symmetrical. The balance is very slightly off, but considering it's blade heavy, that isn't really a problem for hacking and chopping. I'd prefer micarta handles, but for $30, I sure as hell ain't complaining. While I agree with others that the jimping is aggressive, I can only assume most of those are infrequent "weekend warriors," as my calloused, country-boy hands don't find them uncomfortable aggressive during use. I can see why another reviewer feared the tip might be too pointy to withstand hard use, but mine has been stabbed into a tree trunk several times without snapping, and you can watch video reviews on youtube where others have done the same without problems too. The coating isn't going to last long, but for $30, I wouldn't let that stop you, as either forced patina or simply meticulous maintenance and oiling can prevent rusting. Bottom line: for a quarter-inch thick, 1095 carbon steel blade, mine was a steal at $30. I'm very pleased. It's particularly fitting if you want a beater knife to save wear on your high-end Tops/Esee/etc, or if you want a cheap but effect emergency knife to store in places prone to be high-risk targets for burglars, such as your vehicle (state law permitting), vacation cabin, hunting lodge, etc. Perfect for those on a tight budget as well.

Have only taken this knife on a few camping trips, but -- so far -- it has proven to be one of the best purchases ever. Extremely reasonable price for this much steel. I use it for cutting/whittling (10%), chopping (10%) and batoning (80%). Splitting softwoods and hardwoods has never been so easy and safe. WAY better than carrying and swinging a hatchet. Dollar for dollar, probably the best batoning knife on the market. [2018-10-25 UPDATE] In an epic display of irony, the blade broke in half a few hours after I wrote the above review. [2018-10-26 UPDATE] While I'm still dejected over the knife breaking, Schrade/BTI's customer support couldn't be much better: * I called * They said email us a pic * They replied with "replacement on the way"

Das Schrade Schf 37 wurde in der originalen Verpackung und in perfektem Zustand einschließlich Zubehör geliefert. Das Messer ist ein großes und schweres Outdoormesser/Bushcraftmesser und man sollte es auch dafür nutzen. Das Handling dieses Messers ist für eine größere Hand und einen stärkeren Arm bestens geeignet. Das Messer lässt sich sehr gut fassen, dank der Oberflächenstruktur des Griffs. Die Verarbeitung des Messers ist sehr gut, kein Grat am Griff, die Beschichtung ist sauber auf der Klinge aufgebracht und die Klinge ist hervorragend geschliffen und sehr scharf. Der Papier- und Pappeschnitttest war hierbei sehr überzeugend um die Schärfe auszuprobieren. Das Messer schneidet, wie durch Butter. Selbstverständlich habe ich das Messer im Outdoorbereich ausprobiert und hierzu unterschiedlich starke Äste bearbeitet und durchtrennt. Die Arbeit mit dem Messer ist mühelos und es macht Spaß zu sehen wie das Messer diese Aufgabe meistert. Die Beschichtung zeigte keine Abnutzung und die Schärfe des Messers blieb unverändert scharf. Das Zubehör, Messerschärfer und Feuerstarter sind zweckdienlich. Lediglich der Feuerstarter wurde ausprobiert und funktioniert nach Abrieb der schwarzen Schutzschicht hervorragend. Der Messerschärfer mit Diamantkörnung wurde nicht ausprobiert, es bestand hierzu noch keine Veranlassung. Die Messerscheide ist mit einem Durchstechschutz versehen und erfüllt somit seinen Zweck der Aufbewahrung. Das Messer einschließlich Zubehör ist klar zu empfehlen und steht in einem hervorragenden Preis/Leistungsverhältnis.

Es mi tercer cuchillo Schrade. Son grandes productos. De una calidad excelsa. Solo tengo elogios para este producto. Te dan lo mismo que otras marcas al doble o triple de precio. Lo recomiendo al 100%

Llegada antes de lo previsto y con la sensación en la mano de ser una mala bestia!!!. Muy buenas sensaciones, quizás la funda este por debajo del nivel del cuchillo, pero eso es a nota particular, me gustan más las fundas rígidas Trato y atención del reparto excelente.

Just got mine today, Feb 21, 2020. It feels very comfortable in the hands, the coating is on thick and looking down the length of the blade, it's as straight as an arrow. I was actually worried I would receive one that was slightly crooked, but no, It's perfect and came sharp although I did hone it with a rod and is even sharper now. The only thing, but not really an issue, was the choil. A choil usually goes right up to the edge of the blade from the ricasso, this has handle, choil, then a ricasso which is 3/16 of an inch or 4mm before the blade actually begins. I don't think Schrade understands the purpose of a choil on a knife is but whatever, still a good knife. I will update my review if it fails but I have hope for this knife, it feels good in the hand really. It's a good deal as long as they don't raise the price on this knife. Quality control seems to have improved but maybe it was just a few duds that made it out of the factory in the past. The knife came wrapped in multiple layers of plastic wrap and came in a Schrade box. So far it looks great. UPDATE: March 10, 2020. I stripped the coating off with paint stripper and is better at striking ferro rods using the choil which gives off a HUGE shower of sparks using my 1/2-inch thick, 6-inch long ferro rod. I removed the coating because it chipped away with prolonged use and Heavy batoning which in turn made the knife look ugly. the chipping was due to the epoxy paint coat that Schrade uses and is better off stripped. I highly recommend sanding or grinding the blade with a wire brush after paint stripping and possibly bluing the knife. This Schrade 1095 is not a high quality 1095 as I literally saw rust form before my eyes washing the blade under running water after stripping the coating off. I never saw this happen before with any of my Beckers 1095 blades so you will definitely will need to keep the SCH37 oiled. Since getting this knife, I have used it every day and I can say without a doubt, as long as you keep the Diamond sharpener and the ferro rod in the pouch, this knfe will serve you well. I have seen many fails with this knife on youtube, but that is only because these people used this knife for prying which is stupid in my opinion. Do what this knife is designed for and it will certainly last you a very long time. This knife is worth carrying and using out in the woods.

Ich benutze das Schrade jetzt seit ca. 7 Monaten fast täglich. Sei es zum Feuerholz machen, Bäume beschneiden, Wanderstöcke für die Kinder schnitzen, Pfähle Anspitzen oder sogar zum Fenster Aufhebeln. Es liegt gut in der Hand, die Verarbeitung ist für diesen Preis top und es macht einfach Spaß mit diesem Bushcraft zu Arbeiten. Die Nylonscheide ist sehr angenehm zu tragen, sicher und Zweck dienlich. Die aufgesetzte tasche beherbergt einen, zu gebrauchenden, Feuerstein und einen Diamant Schleifstein. Dieser, schaft es im "Feld"gebrauch, die klingenscharten aus zuschleifen und eine gewisse schärfe zu garantieren. Professionell ist er jedoch nicht! Ich kann dieses Messer samt Scheide und zubehör jedem empfehlen der sich, als Hobby, im Garten, Wald oder beim Camping auf ein zuverlässiges Werkzeug verlassen will.
