Doesn’t this crimp and damage the seam everywhere it's fastened?

Good question! When used as directed, there will be no damage to a mechanically seamed roof. There may be some indentations visible on a snap-lock seamed roof, but these indentations are in an inconspicuous location and are generally very minor. If you are referring to damage that may occur after a fall arrest incident, that is a different story. In a fall, the seam may indeed cause damage to the roof or seam, but this is by design--a roof can be replaced, but a human being cannot. Hope this helps!

Does this clamp work even if the protruding flange at the bottom doesn't fit under the edge of the overlapping seam?

remove the bolts and flip the clamp over to the other side of the ring. then it will be set up for a smaller protruding edge (or flange). hope this helps.
