I'm the first timer open ocean swimmer. How does the knife release, and what is the round top metal for? I can't reply??? So thank you in advance.

The black button on the sheath is the release to get the knife out of the sheath. On this knife it's a very simple and efficient release mechanism. The steel blunt end is used to tap on your tank or any surrounding metal as a form of communication with your dive partner.

Is this type of knife best for shar@%, I don't want to jinx myself. Should it be a straight edge knife on both sides for a straight kill just in case?

This knife rusts. Single edge is safer to carry and use. Make sure you hit the nose.

I live in Massachusetts where carrying a double-edged knife is illegal. Would this knife be considered double-edged due to the serrations on the back?

It depends on what the laws of Massachusetts considers as an “edge”, but to be safe I would say yes.

Not sure but I think not. In any case I would not buy it because inferior blade material. The metal was very brittle it broke in half with gentle pressure
