I Love This Book
I am not the person who the authors would expect to love this book. Mostly Modern Quilting is being done by the 20-somethings and 30-somethings who are turned off by precise piecing and traditional blocks. I'm in my 70s and I'm taking a class right now in precise piecing and very traditional blocks. So why do I love this book?It talks to another side of me. I want to do improvisational piecing in addition to more traditional piecing, and this book is filled not just with quilt projects, but with directions and recipes for doing improvisational piecing. And the quilts shown in the book, which you could slavishly copy or which you could simply use as a path to your own designs, are just beautiful. The photography of the quilts is so good I can actually follow how they were quilted as well. And knowing how to quilt something this unusual in creative ways is useful on its own. And I've learned a lot about using visual texture in quilts that look like they are all one color, but really aren't, that I didn't understand before.I've been carrying this book around from table to chair to table to different chair and I keep picking it up, and every time I do I learn something new. If what you want is to learn precise piecing and traditional blocks, go elsewhere as I did. If what you want is to figure out a way to create something unique, not just in color and fabric which you can do with any quilt, but also in design, come here.

Excellent Book on Improvisational Technique
The quilts are beautiful. The approach to illustrating and teaching improvisational techniques is comprehensive and extremely well done. The book is organized by 7 improvisational techniques: Free-Piecing, Improvisational Log Cabin, Slice and Insert, Stitch and Flip Triangle, Strip-Piecing, Modern Crazy-Piecing, and Improvisational Curves. Each section includes 3 projects that demonstrate use of the technique. Modern Quilting is all about mastering technique and seeing the possibilities of using that technique in a quilt design. Jacquie and Katie have distilled the science from the art and given us a toolbox to create with.Improvisational quilting techniques can be tricky to teach. The lack of patterns and templates can be confusing. The book does an outstanding job of removing the mystery and presenting technique lessons in an easy to master format.Kudos to both authors on the contribution this book makes to the world of quilting. However you define modern quilting, this book is certain to broaden your view on quilt construction and leave you pulling fabric off the shelves for your next quilt.

This is a good book for a new quilter who is interested in making modern quilts. There is lots of clear instruction in quilt making. As a seasoned quilter, I was mainly interested in the techniques for free form piecing. These too were well described and I got what I was looking for even though I won't be making any of the specific projects in the book.

The Quilting Modern techniques and projects for improvisational quilts deserves high rating.
The book itself is well thought out by experienced quilters and presenters. I appreciate the photography followed by illustrations and additional design take-off of each quilt. I now understand the how to of improv. as it relates to quilt making. If you plan to buy just one book for this holiday season, this is the one to buy. It is an explosion of creativity.I love it and recommend it without reservation.

Intriguing
I'm always on the lookout for quilting books that can 1.) help me loosen up from traditional piecing techniques and think outside the box, and 2.) help me use up scraps. This book offers simple but intriguing ideas for both. Another reason I'd made this purchase is because the book has great pictures of the different free style quilting stitches used on each quilt. Since I'm just now getting the hang of free motion quilting, this book offers inspirations on how to quilt a quilt in sections using different quilting stitches in each, and most are simple enough for beginners like me. Also, the piecing designs are perfect for placemats and other smaller projects as well as large sized quilts. I'm very glad I've purchased this book for my quilting library!

Quilting Modern
This is I believe a small book packed with tips and ideas for quilting. I ordered it because I had not quilted for a few years and forgot a few simple things that I needed to know to quilt like the measurements for the seams. This book perfectly brought me up to scratch. I think it would be equally good for a beginner. Its easy to read and follow. The book shares a lesson followed by a project incorporating that lesson. There are some lovely quilt ideas.

surpassed my expectations
My copy arrived from Amazon yesterday and I just wanted to write and say how impressed with it I am. I've been quilting for about 10 years now, 8 or so in what you might call art quilting so none of the techniques were completely new to me. But the fresh, new way they were presented had all sorts of ideas coming into my head ( I had to remind myself of all the WIPs and promised pieces I had to finish before I could indulge in too much play). The clear instructions and diagrams and the warm and encouraging tone of the writing will mean that everyone from relative beginners to 'old hands' will feel enabled to have a go and expand their repertoire. I have to confess that often I get excited to see a new quilting book coming out and when it arrives I am a bit disappointed. This book surpassed my expectations.

Better on second read
I was disappointed on the first read of this book, but picked it up for a second read and my opinion changed greatly.I really liked the approach to techniques and have been inspired to make the fiesta quilt. I followed the instructions in the book, but think my wall hanging is smaller than the picture in the book - fewer lines in my centre block. The quilt has come out beautifully and I will now make city lights. The instructions are clear and concise, the construction diagrams are perhaps slightly too lightly shaded and require concentration. The only reason I have given four stars is I like books with spiral binding to sit open beside my sewing machine.

Brilliantly simple explanations
Love the book and makes quilting design planning so.much easier. The book shows the basic cuts needed to combine shapes from fabric without the need for templates. Ground-breaking decision can be made to move away from traditional piecing or combine tradition with a more modern approach.
