For those who are struggling to make your newly cut key work, bear in mind that the new key must be programmed by a dealer or a locksmith who has the software to code your key. If your newly cut key can turn on the lights, the cutting part was done correctly. However, without programming, it won't start the engine. You may follow some online instructions to "program" your key, but only to a point where your remote buttons work, and the key won't start your engine. This is because your new key must be programmed and authenticated, and the authentication identifier must be saved in your car. The battery in your remote only powers the remote functions, but the identifier on your new key is coded on the piece of firmware in your remote which does not lose the identifier information even when the power source is off.

I will take some of the blame here. I didnt do any research about cutting and coding the key. BMW wont touch these keys. I found a local locksmith to cut them $100 a key. I found a separate guy to code 1 of the keys, $200. Key lasted from May 2025 till April 2026. It wasnt dropped or abused, it just stopped starting the car. Do your do diligence. I couldnt find anyone who would program the second key, not sure it would be a good idea anyway. I found a local locksmith, provided the key, cut it and programmed it for under $200

I was a little apprehensive about the programming, but it worked just fine on my 2002 530 series. I did have to try it a couple of times; I wasn’t doing the initial on/off step completely. You’ll want to turn on far enough that the fan comes on, not just the clock, but don’t start the car! Do that five times in a closed door car with a working key. Remove the key, then -with the new key, while holding down the unlock/arrow button, press the center lock button three times with a 2 second pause between. Do that within 30 seconds of the on/off sequence. I’ve not had the key cut at Ace Hardware yet, but it won’t even matter if that part isn’t successful because my original keys are just no longer powered but still start the car! Now my alarm doesn’t scream every time I unlock the door! (A key at the dealer would have been close to $200.) I just ordered a second blank! Note, I’ve not verified this, but I understand there are only a handful of times a BMW key can be duplicated before programming freezes.

Works fine as far as pairing the remote with the car, but the transponder is another story. Locksmith can’t program it. BMW can’t program it. It can do everything except start the car.

Easy to operate but you need to use blades to open it just like the official one. Anyway cheaper than the official one and kinda great deal
