It's older! Updates on the firmware for better performance. Battery life better. The Tascam DR-05x supports MicroSDXC SD cards, plus a brighter screen.

Can you monitor using headphones while recording from line in?

Yes, of course. And you can adjust the volume too. The manuals online are fantastic. Not related to your question, but I like the timer start recording. Wow, set it to record from 7:59 -10:05 pm automatically. Extremely handy.

What are the differences between dr-05x, dr-05x model 2019 and dr-05 version 2? i enjoy playing my sax and recording myself over playalong cd's.

There's no difference between the DR-05X and 2019 model as the 05X was only introduced in 2019. Version 2 was an older version. The display on the newer one is brighter and easier to read. This model will accept more SD card styles and a larger sd card size.
