Full of information and knowledge. As much as I like using my computer to work on cars, nothing beats having a book in front of you.

I bought this because I had to rebuild the L16 in my '73 620. Everyone in the community raves about how good a book it is. It certainly walks you through the process step by step and was invaluable, but I have a couple of nitpicky things to say. Specific to this book, the layout left a lot to be desired at times. The paragraph writeup on a procedure was often on one page, and depending on how far into a chapter you were, the photos and their notes could be 3-5 pages further along in the book, nestled in with completely different procedures. It required a lot of flipping back and forth to get all the information, which was annoying and frustrating, especially with filthy hands full of tools. You can't just go by the photos and their footnotes. I tried doing that, and then when I would go back to the full verbiage section there would be important details that you needed to know that weren't mentioned with the photos, and you would have to re-do the work. If they had just kept the information all together at the expense of some blank space on a page here and there it would have made the user experience 100% better. I used this fuide in conjunction with a Chilton's book and an original Datsun factory service manual. There were some noted differences on a few bolt torque specs between the 3 books, which is odd/concerning. When there was a conflict I went with the factory manual specs. There was also no torque info for a couple things like installing new exhaust manifold studs, and some things that really could have used photos didn't have them. Lastly, and this is a problem with all the books I have, even the factory manual, there is little to no information about fastener lengths, only diameter and maybe pitch. When you're putting together an engine that's near 50 years old and it's been months or years since you took it apart, or maybe you never had it together in the first place, or you need to get a replacement bolt, this is critical info to have. When one part, like the timing cover, may have fasteners that are 3 different sizes and all different lengths, the last thing you want to do is short-thread something or bottom out/punch through a bolt that's too long. Even when this book specifically warns you that you can damage something if you put a longer bolt in the wrong location at a certain point of reassembly, it doesn't always specify what the right location or bolt size is. It's very frustrating and seems like simple info that could be included for the few parts that need it. Anyhow, as helpful as this book is, I don't think it's a standalone. Have a couple different resources on hand and be prepared to hunt some stuff down online depending on how extensive your rebuild is.

Exactly what I was looking for!

So far this book has been a great information resource. I am working on a 3D solid model design project involving the L-series engine and this book has served me well so far for basic design information (cylinder spacing, deck height, main bearing diameter, etc.). I expect this book will serve my needs when I procure an L-series engine and set to work rebuilding it.

I read on many websites that this book was a good to start working on engines especially if you start working with the L series like I did. this book includes a lot of pictures, explanations and everything you may need to start rebuilding your first engines, it takes you by the hand from start to finish explaining almost everything.
