The first part of this word (kkhae), means “seasame.” So, a direct, literal translation of “kkaennip” into English is “sesame leaf.” This linguistic quirk is the primary reason for the common misnomer. While the sesame plant does have leaves, they are not typically eaten in Korean or other cuisines. They are generally considered to be quite tough and not particularly flavorful. So, if you see “sesame leaves” in a Korean recipe or at a Korean grocery store, especially in a context where they are being eaten as a vegetable or pickled, it almost certainly refers to perilla leaves (kkaennip).
