Review: A great bench that's worth the price, but with some minor flaws. - A fantastic bench, that is worth the price, but with some minor flaws. I received this bench about two weeks ago. I assembled the majority of it the night I got it and finished it the next night. All together, it took less than two hours to assemble. I was curious about several things that I didn't see answered anywhere, so I'll go ahead and answer a few questions I had. First, the bench can withstand 600 total pounds (user's weight + lifting weight). You will need a few tools (I believe I used a socket wrench and a 10 mm socket, but don't quote me on that), but everything else is provided. There are numerous reasons why I gave 5 stars for this bench. 1. The bench feels very, very stable when I'm lifting. I have the bowflex adjustable dumbbells (5-90 lbs) and routinely use 90lbs/dumbbell. When doing this, I haven't even felt the bench move. I also have a Cap bench that feels quite unstable when lifting this much weight (one of the reasons for this purchase). Granted, the other bench was cheaper, but this bench feels solid. 2. There are multiple positions available to do numerous lifts. You can do decline, flat and incline chest presses and you can move the bench part to 3 different locations to ensure your lifting from a comfortable location. I haven't tried the shoulder press yet, so I don't know if the positioning is awkward, but it looks normal to me (I know, really helpful stuff there). The preacher curl can easily be removed or change the position of it, so it's not in your way during other lifts. 3. There are two different locations to put the squat rack attachments in, ultimately allowing more flexibility. I'm able to use either one. However, if you're under 5'-5" or so (my guess), it may be difficult to squat using this. 4. The leg attachment can be locked in the down position, which is nice when doing other lifts. That way, it isn't swinging around when you don't want it to be. 5. The seat is nice and big (both wide and long). Again, my Cap bench has a miniscule seat and makes it a little awkward when doing one handed presses. 6. The preacher curl attachment is easily removable/addable as necessary. 7. There is TONS of room to use dumbbells with this, in addition to barbells. There are a lot of benches where it can become cramped when using dumbbells. I found this to be kind of annoying, even at gyms with commercial grade equipment. Now, I do have to move the barbell attachments (easily done). However, there is plenty of room for me to use my dumbbells when I feel like it. I have found some minor flaws. Some affect me and others have not. 1. The bench takes up a LOT of room. If you account for the room needed for squatting, a 7' bar and the rotation of the leg curls/extensions, this bench has a pretty massive footprint. I have an unfinished basement, so it's not terrible for me. But, it probably needs something close to a 8' x 12' space. 2. The seat seems to wiggle a little much. I haven't noticed it AT ALL while I'm lifting. However, I moved the bench the other day and it didn't seem as secure as I was expecting. As I just said, this doesn't seem to be a big deal and I'm sure it's fine, since I haven't felt it at all while I'm lifting, just an observation. 3. The preacher curl bar is kind of close to the leg curl bars. I actually hit the leg curl bar a few times with dumbbells while doing preacher curls. However, I have now raised the preacher curl attachment up to where the pin is holding the entire thing up (rather than being in one of the holes, I fully inserted the pin and then put the preacher curl attachment in, ergo the pin is holding up the attachment). Now it's a little high and I have to stand to do preacher curls. Not a big deal in my book and shouldn't be a big deal to anyone who has a curl bar. I personally found the preacher curl bar provided to be crap, but others may want to use it. 4. Using heavy dumbbells can make for some awkwardness with this bench. There's a lot going on and the seat is nice and big. All in all, that's a pro. However, when trying to kick your legs over the seat, with dumbbells in your hand, it can become a little awkward. I haven't used the leg extension part yet, but my wife seems to like it a lot.
Review: Very nice piece of equipment! - I almost ordered the Marcy MD 867, which was getting hard to find.....then I researched and found the MD 857 and am glad I did. From what I can see, the 857 is actually better designed and has all the features of the 867. When using the leg extension, your feet do not touch the floor. The 6 roller design is a must. The seat back can be adjusted to near vertical, but this is not a lockable position, still usable though. Although a 7' weight bar would be more conducive to the width of this unit, I am presently using a 6' bar without problems. With a 6' bar, there is little room for error when racking the bar, but a spacer on the bar can be used to position the weight plate farther from the upright. I have attached a pic for clearance reference. I really like the plug-in bar racks on the 857 versus the 867. Although the seat is a little loose upon adjusting your weight, once I began my exercise, it didn't seem to distract me or make me feel unsafe. Also, putting this unit together from the box was very easy. All the needed hardware is included in two blister packs and are labeled with description and part number. The hardware I received in the blister packs was exactly what was needed to complete the unit, down to the last washer. Also, this unit is capable of using weight plates with 1" holes....just don't install the Olympic 2" plugs onto the weight holders during installation. Overall, this is a really nice unit for the price. It may not be designed for commercial use like at a gym, but for home use....I think it is a really well thought out, sturdy, and well designed unit. Kudos to Marcy for putting together such a nice and universal bench for a reasonable price point.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How good is the stability of this bench?**
A: Stability is bad as i said in my review i weight about 290 and press close to 250lbs on this bench and its scary i've bent the bar that supports your back and it also makes loud popping noise its fine if you are doing 225 and under but once u go up in the weight and try to max it becomes unstable. Still a very nice useful machine and the squat rack works for other things!!

**Q: How many back pad positions can it be adjusted?**
A: This model has 5 different angles which the backrest can adjust to. The bench can adjust to an incline, decline and flat position.

**Q: Can you do flat bench press other than incline press**
A: Yes, the bench does lay flat, inclines and declines depending on your needs

**Q: Will the reverse squats section work for an individual that is 6' tall?**
A: Yeah, I'm 6"1 and it works fine for me. I usually have to put the back rest all the way down to make room.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice bench all things considered
*by P***L on December 10, 2012*

I ordered the bench on Black Friday and it was delivered a few days later to my delight. Initially I was worried because the box was extremely damaged on delivery, the parts inside were not at all secured, and I placed high odds on missing parts. However, all parts were included and assembly took my girlfriend and I about 2-3 hours, the time being delayed significantly because of one or two steps which I will explain below. In all, assembly was pretty easy and we spaced it out over a couple nights during the week. I recommend having 2 people for assembly for obvious reasons but 1 person could certainly get the job done. The tools required would be an adjustable wrench (not included) or socket wrench (not included, highly recommended), allen wrench set (included but stripped easily - recommend having a backup set on hand) and a screwdriver (not included). The parts kit comes well labeled and I found it very easy to find which parts I needed from the labeled packaging. The manual / instructions set for your reference can be found below. In my review, I will reference parts from the manual. If the link is expired please search for it online. [...] I did not encounter any issues until step 4, A & B. The U-shaped pin (#49) does not line up with the leg developer (#10). It's hard to explain but the leg developer I suspect was soldered slightly incorrectly at the bottom where it touches the leg developer support (#13). Because the part was soldered slightly too far, the U-shaped pin will not line up with the hole in the leg developer. This is not a big deal unless you want to do sit up exercises as indicated in step 5, C. For now I haven't decided what to do about it but I will probably just bend the U-shaped pin a bit to line up with the holes or drill the hole slightly wider. The pin's primary (and only) use is to secure the leg developer when using it for sit ups so there are no large amounts of stress on the pin and it's not a primary part for most functions of the bench. The other way to get around this defect would be to stack weights on the leg developer to provide enough resistance for the sit ups. The only other concern I have about the bench is the seat. I feel Marcy cheaped-out with designing the seat and left more to be desired. The seat is OK and will handle any load I expect to place on it, but it's a bit wobbly because of how it's designed. Please see step 3, C & D. The L-shaped pin (#53) is where the seat wobbles based on the design. Finally, I'm yet to actually use the bench as I'm looking for a discounted Olympic weight set but from assembly I am confident the bench will live up to it's ratings. Overall the bench is solid and I'm happy with the purchase other than the 2 issues noted above. I hope this review helps someone make an informed decision. For the price of this bench I got what I paid for and much more and expect to have this for quite some time. Good luck!
