This did an ok job over the years but I always wondered how a whetstone would work. I even considered sending our kitchen knives away to be sharpened professionally. Well I'm so happy that I purchased this whetstone instead. After a couple times, I have a good feel and rhythm for drawing the knife across the stone. I don't even use the guide. It's so great having sharp knives again that slice cleanly through bell peppers, tomatoes, etc. It's also safer letting a sharp blade do the cutting instead of monkeying around with dull blades. Once a month I sit down and take the time to sharpen all the knives in the house. This is not a situation where you just run the knife over this a few times and expect it to be sharp. No, this is a situation where you need to sit down and run a knife over this 10 or so times on each side nice and slow. The sharpening guide isn't awesome but it works. Not sure how long that plastic thing will hold up.
