The back and front of the button come loosely attached. You pull the back of by using the metal pin located on the back. After removing the back, you use it to create a template for the rest. I trimmed a bit smaller than the back. I found that sticking to the traced line caused over-lapping, which made attaching the back that much difficulter. The back snaps in place.
