I suspect the smell is similar to older makeup you eventually need to throw out. However, the shelf life of DermMatch is considerably shorter **Q: My hair is somewhere between dark brown and black, with minimal intermittent grey. Is it better to use the dark brown or black Dermmatch concealer?** A: My hair is exactly the same and I used the dark brown and it worked just fine. I haven't tried the black, maybe that would have been better or not, but I am happy with the dark brown. It may also depend on your skin tone. My skin is very bright white on my scalp so the dark brown worked to create a shadow. It does not totally darken the skin. I don't think it is meant to do so. It just creates a translucent shadow over the skin, but the effect of it somehow makes my hair look thicker and makes my scalp less visible. If you have a deeper skin tone maybe the black powder would have more effect. If not, I recommend the dark brown. **Q: How is this better/different from a product like joan rivers great hair day powder?** A: First of all DermMatch contains 1.4 ounces of compressed powder. Joan Rivers product I believe contains less than 1/4 ounce. DermMatch is water resistant. It gives the hair a much thicker appearance.
