Laminate means that it’s a sort of thin plywood, with several layers of wood sandwiched together. Laminate is more resilient than solid wood, generally, creating a tougher, more stable instrument. The top is responsible for 90 percent of a ukulele’s tone character, and solid wood, properly done, is the premium standard. The sides and back can color the sound and affect projection, and what is to be hoped for is that laminate sides and back don’t color it with a scratchy, “boxy” sound. Good laminate usually sounds fine, sometimes very good, as is the case with this Tom instrument. The solid wood top is thin, under 2mm; it produces a rich, warm, rounded sound, the kind typical of a traditional ukulele. Low tones are mellow and resonate, high tones are clear and bell-like.
