I've always loved Vans shoes & clothing. Cool style & great quality. He started off using these for special occasions but he's found them so comfortable he wears them more often now! They go with everything, smart or casual. The shoe itself is suede on outside so be careful in wet weather. He's not complained at all of them being narrow or too thin in the sole. (I've noticed depending on the type of Vans shoe it can be narrower than usual.
