I have used golden oak for kitchen oak cabinets, and dark oak for 25 year old Minwax 230 Early American stained oak trim, and cherry for an antique cherry dininig room table and they all did not "darken" anything. The owners unit has original dark oak woodwork which we kept. We previously cleaned it with Murphy's oil soap which did remove grime, so an essential step. But it still look dull and lifeless. We started in just the dining room today but the result is stunning. It now looks like well maintained 104 year old trim. It would have been wrong if it looked brand new.
